mmmkay. You know how npc's gain experience while you're "away", and so, as you level up, they level up, so that they're not completely obsolete and weak when you pick them up? well i picked up garrick as a bard, to use him to identify different things. I didn't have room for him in my party, however, and so i let him go after i was done. Will he ever earn XP again, without actually adventuring with my party? and how does the whole leveling up process work for npc's whom you haven't met yet?

NPC's does not gain XP while you're gone - so if you really want them in your party for the long haul, you'll have to keep them.

I think - the first time you pick a NPC up the XP is set depending on tha average lvl of your party. I know that for instance Arjarsis, Shar-Teel or Viconia changes lvl's depending on when you first meet them

Yes, there are two or three different versions of each NPC, differing in levels. If you first pick up an NPC, you get the version with the level that's closest to your party's average level. However, Ar-Cunin is right in that once you dump an NPC, their XP stays the same until you pick them up again.
