Places

Im already in chapter 3 and I just started yesterday, I haven't left atkhatla yet. Will I be made to go to different places on the map as my journey progresses or are most of the other places outside of athkatla just for side quests and not part of the main plot? In BG1 I remember I had explored a lot more places.

BG2 is a lot more "sidequesty" than BG1. The Main Plot of BG2, map-wise, is roughly as follows:

1. Be in Athkatla.
2. Do whatever you want.
3. Be in Athkatla.
4. Go to a certain place you've never been before.
5. Go to another place you've never been before.
6. Do whatever you want.
7. Return to Athkatla.
8. Do whatever you want.
9. Go to another place you've never been before.

Where BG1 was very linear, in the sense that large areas of the World Map were off-limits to you until you'd unlocked them, in BG2 you can access any area (except those referenced in the above list under numbers 4, 5, and 9) right from the start of the game. In addition, the map areas not concerned with the main plot are typically connected with specific major quests.

Well, allow me to add that the "Do whatever you want" that appears as Item 2 on my list also appears as items 6 & 8: If you don't do it now, it'll still be waiting for you when you get back.

Yes, you can do the outside quests later, with the only exception being that if an *NPC* asks you to do a quest outside (or inside for that matter), do it fast as you can because the NPC could leave you otherwise.

Okay, another question. I went to the something hills. I cant remember the name, its where the dryad queen is for the acorns. And when I came back to Athkatla the notes on all the maps disappeared. An now when I right click on the map, I cant add a note. How can I fix that?

Easy enough. Go to the map screen and click the icon on the top left of the map screen itself. See if that doesn't work.

I finished the proof of mae'var treachery quest, but I dont know what to do next in the main plot, renal blood scalp says that he doenst have anything for me to do. Will something happen after some time or am I forgetting to do something.

Renal isn't part of the main plot. If you've killed Mae'var, there's nothing more you can do with him.
