I'm just getting into this game for the first time and am considering different characters to make - mainly a Skald/Totemic Druid or Skald/Ranger character. I don't have a gamebook, and just read from a faq that you need to have the main attribute of your second class at 17. What starting stats would I need then to make either of these? I'm not really sure what the main attribute is for either one.

You can't... Bards, along with sorcs, monks, and barbarians, cannot dualclass. Look at "legal" options for multiclassing.... if it's not a multiclass, you can't dual it, either.
And preemptively, no... there are no mods, tweaks, or other ways to fix this.. It's hardcoded.

Dual class: Humans only. Start with one class (can be a specialist) and then elect to switch to a different class (can only be a generalist, i.e. plain fighter, not wizard slayer; or plain thief, not bounty hunter). Also limitations on which classes can be used to dual from, as indicated above.
Multi-class: Demi-humans only. Start with a character that splits EXP between two classes at the same time. Limitations on the class combinations based on race (Dwarves, Gnomes, and Halflings have only certain combinations available to them). There are many good threads on the relative advantages/disadvantages of single versus dual- versus multi-classing. Good luck.
