I'm about to go insane, I've been trying to figure out how to solve this for about 2 weeks.
I had ToB installed, when I opened it up it would say "Please Insert CD 2 into D:\" D:\ is my cd rom, now that's all great, I put the CD in, and nothing happens, I assume it has problems reading the CD, as sometimes it says "Please Insert Expansion CD" and the same thing happens, put CD in, nothing happens. I uninstalled ToB and SoA, than reinstalled SoA, which is where I'm at right now. I've tried Running it under WIN 95/98 compatibility, and still no dice. Below is the Sysinfo from that nifty Bioware program. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- BioWare Corp. you know, you could probably have trimmed some of that. to be honest nobody here can interpret most of that garble anyway.
however, i can suggest a workaround for this problem, which occured to my when i switch to using backup-cds (the BG2 discs are low-quality and tend to die if overused). go to www.gamecopyworld.com . dont be scared by the legalities of it, your just here to run a game you legally own. (you do legally own it dont you?) find a mirror (just hit a random one in the right area, but any should work)find a no-cd patch for the correct verion of BG2. the site is fairly simple to follow. last time i was there BG2:ToB was in the new games panel in the centre of the main page. theres a complete game index somwhere to the right. while your there, you should also get any other no-cds that will make your life easier, and your discs safer, jsut in case somebody decides to snap them. (happend to me). just gone through your post again, there are _no_ problems that i can detect. id say it was a dead CD. a CD-R might have better luck reading it than a standard CD-ROM, since they have to have tighter focussing etc. but its simpler to get a no-cd patch.

Looking at your sysinfo there it seems like SOA is up and running okay but you are having a problem with TOB itself. If you have installed it then it is not recognised and if you look under the game ini file contents, it only recognised 4 cd's out of the five also.
I suggest un-installing it all again and trying SOA only to see if that works. Going by your sysinfo, you shouldn't have a problem with it at all. It's most likely your TOB cd that might be corrupt or the instal itself isn't working out like it is supposed to. You've also only done a recommended instal from what I see. Although that shouldn't make any difference at all, try a full instal as well if you have the time to play around with it. |

Do you have two graphics cards installed? It looks like you have a GForce 3 and a Riva TNT. This might be somthing to do with it. also XP being new, Has been known to cause compatibility problems and I beliive that somwhere in the BG2 manual it says somthing about uninstalling from the some OS as installing from. This might work for playing as well... it can't hurt to try, so make sure u install and play from W98. Also I have to disagree with 'andrewas' that the specs that you put up, some people are perfictly capable of understanding and things like this can help alot with technical problems, if you are reciving replys from people who know a lot about PC's as well as play the games.
PS: if having two graphics cards is the problem then this would be affecting other games as well and not just baldurs gate2. |

I didnt pick up on the double graphics cards/Cd-rom drives since some machines actualy do have that. and the CD aliases etc are correct for an SoA only installation, which is what you have at this point.
The double graphics card etc could just be ghosts from before an upgrade. Go to my computer->control panel-> system and remove the older ones. Check if you actualy do have two graphic cards first though, or you'll end up installing drivers all over again. While they might not be causing your current problem, They will be slowing down your machine and might cause problems later. When you say cant install ToB, do you mean its comes up with play and refuses to let you install it (try running the setup program on the ToB cd directly), or does it give an error. I dont think the no-cd causes this, but ToB does replace your exe so youd need to get a new one patch anyway, since the SoA patch does not work for ToB. Anyway, when an install gets seriously screwed like this, its often best to backup your saves, uninstall it and delete the directory, thus removing as much of it as possible, and preventing something in the override directory sticking around and causing hassle later. Then you can re-install from scratch, and maybe it'll work again. you could also try scanning for a virus, they can cause all kinds of errors, although i havent heard of one doing this.
