How viable is the cleric/mage soloable in SoA and ToB? And any tips on how to play them effectively?

No not really you'll get stuck on group enemies and stuff like dragons. Baldurs gate just isn't a solo game that's that.

at the start maybe (Amn)- plenty of magic. The prob. here is the pitiful THAC0. but this can be compensated for with 2nd level cleric stat increase spell (strength of, or power something), girdles, Flail of ages, ect. Very tough, but it can prob. be done. - be sure to purchase as many of those air rings as you can for the invisibility.

in TOB yes, but you should really import the Crom F. for this. and you will be using most of your mage spells for summoning monsters.

If your a dwarf class (and it allows this combo) then be sure to get the dwarven throwing hammer as well.

it should be not only possible but easy as. a cleric by herself is simple, as i have prove. dualling to mage can only make it easier. the trick is to know your abilities and use them to their utmost, use wit guile and knowledge of what you can and cant do. ie: high wisdom & intelligence heehee.

look here: http://ericathecleric.homestead.com/
and for dazzling screenshots, here: http://kitkasbasement.homestead.com/

one day i will get around to updating both pages.. but since bg dungeon went down..so long ago now.. well. maybe soon. we will see. homestead is shutting its doors so i may have to move them again. gr-r-r-r

Most people seem to solo a thief or multi class thief when going through so they may avoid traps and such. A cleric can detect traps with spells, and the mage in him/ her can dimension door past the problem, unless it's a trapped container. I intend to solo a F/M/C with the xp cap removed one day, but the M/C would give you better feats without the XP cap off.

yes, traps can be a problem to any solo class besides theif, but a mage has knock, a cleric has find traps. you either suck it in and take the damage then heal yourself, or use summoned beasties to take damage. bears are good, and skellie warriors take good damage because of magic resistance. you shouldnt forget that with the right gear there arent too many problems as you can get your magic resistance up around 65 or higher %. the spell maxes at 40, + items like armour and ring of gaxx, shields and amulets.. all in one of your bags of holding for such an occasion.. and there is the cloak of the sewers, the soloers friend. troll form regenerates you, and thereby trap damage is overcome, and rat form is too light to set the floor ones off. you should have the MOD+2, or the amulet of power, so neg plane protection is permenant, they are the only traps that matter a damn, other than poison. but who doesnt carry at least two potions against that? heehee.
