I'm going to play BG2 again now that I've got some time off college. Only completed it once before, with a mage for my player character.

I've been thinking about playing a fighter/thief, since there are no real viable thief NPCs to take.

I've never played a chaotic or evil party before; I've heard it can be fun...I'm going for chaotic neutral! And I may corrupt Anomen for added amusement; then let him kill Aerie.

Any thoughts?

If you're going to go with a party that includes a good tank (like Korgan), consider taking the assassin kit.

I've taken an assassin halfway through the game before, and had a lot of fun. He was always out front scouting, and starting off every battle with a poisoned backstab. Definitely a character who can be the star in the party (dual to a fighter if you want to be able to melee, or stay single classed for improved backstab and more uses of poison weapon--even at range, poisoned arrows of biting are wickedly lethal, and poisoned arrows of dispelling are a mage's worst nightmare).

Many battles become much easier when you backstab the mage (either killing him, or rendering him dying and useless due to poison), then quickly score a hit on a second mage or a cleric, taking two enemy casters out of the fight in round one.

The assassin is also a great class for a chaotic or evil character.

The evil quartet; PC Fighter/Thief or Fighter/Mage/Thief, Korgan, Viconia, and Edwin is a great combo, and quite good fun, with a possible romance option to boot. Clearly not playing with a full party will allow for faster level ups. As you suggest, you can take on Anomen or an array of other NPCs if you wish to fill it out to six.

Unfortunately to role play this party to the 'nth' degree means turning down a few good XP yielding quests, with not terribly much reward (some handy armor and a couple of effective swords however sping to mind).

for a maybe slightly less usual suggestion (especially if you don't like sneaking much or are fond of clerics) would be a thief of some sort dualled-to cleric

a really late dual (waiting for UAI) eventually gets you a blade-wielding cleric which is good for a laugh

even a low level dual gives you a utility thief, reasonable at fighting cleric who (if you pick a neutral alignment) can turn and destroy undead instead of viconia's 'charm undead' which i've always found annoying in practice
