Okay, time to play an evil party. I think I will use NPCs this time.

I'm still deliberating as to whether I want have at least one good aligned NPC in the party all the time (which of course means rep can't fall too low :-\ )just to progressively piss them off with my evil ways and eventually kill them.

But if I do play 'evil only' I'll select from the following pool:

Monty
Edwin
Kagain
Shar Teel (hmm, or perhaps for more of a challenge I'd use Xzar instead of a second tank)
Viconia

I've never used Tiax but I now see that he has the special ability to Summon Ghast--that certainly sounds interesting.

Anyway, any suggestions about what class might be the most fun for me to play?

I was thinking of dualing a thief to necromancer. The thieving would be almost solely in order to backstab, really. I'd put all the points into stealth first and pickpocketing second. If I dual him at thief level 5 he'd have 120% stealth with the boots of stealth and around 80% pickpocketing. Eventually he would be wearing Drizzt's Mithril chain mail, which I believe you can both thieve and cast spells in. I'd have Monty handle the traps and chests. Then he could reach necromancer level 9 with several level 5 spell slots this way. And since I would be playing Dark Side, he'll get to higher levels than that. I would definitely roleplay him to cast his own school's necromancy spells first and foremost too. They are very impressive.

It's good that you're planning to go Thief->Necro in BG1, because BG2 won't allow it. But if I were you, I'd really put 100% in Pockets, it lowers your failure rate to almost nil. Also, I've noticed that when I got ToSC, 100% Stealth wasn't enough anymore. I found it worthwhile to pump Stealth all the way up to the maximum (which I think is 175%) and wear the Shadow Armor and Boots of Stealth, so that I knew he'd be able to turn invisible whenever I told him to. If you're sure you want to Dual this guy in BG1, I'd suggest maybe Locks and Pockets. That way, you could take care of the Thieving parts of actually robbing people, and Monty could handle the Traps and Backstabbing end.

Priests can cast spells while wearing Drizzt's mail, but Mages cannot. As a Mage/Thief, you wouldn't be able to wear it anyway. With REAL Elven Chainmail, you CAN cast Mage spells through it, and it CAN be worn by any class, even Mages (so I hear). But Drizzt's mail is not true Elven Chainmail. The only advantages it gives are for Rangers, Fighter/Thieves, and Bards: You don't have to take it off to use your Thieving skills, and it's the best armor a Bard can wear.

Hmm, just tested it and I found he can't wear Drizzt's chainmail at all! (Not useable by: druid, thief, mage.) So it would definitely be Shadow Armor that he'd be wearing.

Oh--also, yeah I don't plan on taking this character into BG2/ToB. I doubt I will ever take a character all the way through the whole thing. But anyway, only a day or two ago I researched that notion of a thief-necromancer for BG2 in response to a recent thread and disovered you can't. But I do like the idea of using a thief-necromancer for an evil party in Bg1/Tales/DS.

The most ultilitarian thing would probably be to let Monty do the backstabing, as you suggest, since he joins you at level one with like 60% stealth, IIRC. (Although this character could start with 50% stealth in his own right.) I dunno... I was thinking I'd rather have the satisfaction of chunking people from behind with my main character. Another thing is I want to be able to walk up stealthed, backstab with Varscona first, and finish them off by slapping Vampiric Touch and Ghoul Touch on them, and then if necessary follow with the other close range spells I rarely use with a pure mage like Shocking Grasp, Burning Hands, color spray, etc. In any case, I would need the high stealth to get up close.

Having tried this out a little bit I'm not sure how much I like the thief/mage combination in actual practice...

I am also really liking my necromancer in the specialist mage party I'm currently playing. I may just play that guy again as the main character in the evil party.

You CAN play a Thief/Necromancer in BG2, just as long as you dual BEFORE importing it to SoA. Namely, you must do it in BG1.

This way, you can get to play an Assasin/Necromancer in SoA, since it lets you pick a kit for your original class.

May i just ask something, what is all this 'kit' thing, i haven't played SoA yet, i'm a first time player in the forgotton realms sort of rpg games and i'm still on my way in completing BG1/ToTSC.

I'm more used to the Diablo2 LoD rpg gaming style.

In BG1 only Mages can select kits (Conjurer, Necromancer, Illusionist, etc).

In BG2 all classes (besides the Mage) can select from 3 kits each, like Assasin for Thief, or Berserker for Fighter. It makes playing more interesting since it gives you more variety in classes.

When I tried doing this what I found was that the mage specialization of necromancer that I had chosen in BG1 was erased in the conversion process upon importing to BG2! Upon entering BG2 you must choose a kit for the original class, which is thief in this case--I chose assassin. But as I said, where I was formerly a necromancer that got changed to standard mage. At least that is what it said on the character record sheet.

Kits are specializations within a class. The following FAQ here at IW gives you an overview:

http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/bald...html#character

Unless I missed it somehow, I could not find a section here at IW that describes the kits, but you can read the descriptions at PBG:

Well on page 19 of the BG2 manual, it says that you can only have ONE kit. So a kit can [usually] be dualed, but not to another kit. The idea of an evil Assassin-Necromancer sounds very cool though.

You could just make a multiclass thief-mage instead. You'd be able to get better thieving skills bonuses from the non-human races.

I am currently playing thru bg1 and tosc with a human fighter and heres the plan.
Beginning stats are str 18/68
dex 18
con 18
int 17
wis 10
cha 12
Now i plan to use all the tomes on myself thus having v good stats..
i will keep him as a straight fighter all the way to the end of bg2 by which time he should be lvl 21 or 22.Once he hits level 21 or 22 he will have a few special abilities (greater whirlwind attacks).
Once these special abilities have been achieved dual class to a mage
and once u reach your xp cap limit..u will have access to lvl 9 spells....rather powerful...in particular Time Stop combined with whirlwind attack and the gods themselves are at your mercy....
Thats the theory anyway.
