Maybe it's just me, but the only spell protection I ever use is spell immunity, and that is only in certain cases. That is probably because I've always found spell protections to not work at all. Can someone give me a good description on the differences of the different spell protections, what they do, and what they actually protect against?

I already know not to cast magic missile with someone who has a blue-white sphere below their feet, unless I happen to have one as well. Unfortunately, damage spells are generally not dangerous to me, since I can protect from magic energy (improved corthala armor and inertial barrier work great) or fire or acid or any other elemental damage very easily.

Not quite. Does spell trap block Imprisonment (trap the soul)? What about a simple maze? Abazigal's mate keeps whooping me even though I have on SoTM's spell trap. Is Creeping doom an area affect spell, even though it requires an actual target to cast on it, and you can't target invisible creatures?

Spell Trap will block all single target non protection dispeller spells, including Imprisonment and Maze. Generally, the only spell defenses worth talking about are Spell Turning (reflects single target attack spells) and Spell Trap (absorbs single target attack spells).

Creeping Doom is area effect spell, but I am not quite sure if it goes through Spell Trap or not, because of bad personal experiences with trying to get it to stick on Improved Irenicus, and I am not playing a druid right now so I cannot test it out on a random lich.

AoE spells will generally be absorbed by (Minor)Spell Deflection/Trap if the spell is targetted on the protected caster. Note that certain spell protections will have no effect on spells that are too high level for them to handle.

The Spells Reference is pretty through on this.

Creeping Doom will be stopped by spell trap. However, if your lich has a friend present you can target the friend and the lich will be affected (unless the friend also has a spell trap of course).
