I have killed Irenicus, for the first time, and I was sent to hell. I have already gotten 4 of the tears you need to open the door you have there, but I am having problems with the fifth one. It is where there are the ancient orbs and gauths. I just simply can't kill them, since they slaughter my party way too fast. And the cloak the demon gives doesn't help that much. Any help on how to win this combat would be appreciated.
My party is: all at xp cap
Main character fighter with flail from Nalia's castle
Minsc with the +4 two handed sword you get to buy in the promenade shop
Aerie
Jaheira
Haer-Dali

There are two different caves that lead to the tear.

The first is filled with Gauths and Elder Orbs for you to kill.

The second cave instills your party with fear.

You do not have to fight the Gauths and Elder Orbs.

If you DO want to fight them I suggest you summon a few high level summons to help you in the battle and buff up properly.

ehhh? since you come this far, you should already clean out the two beholder lairs in the game or did you miss them and never really fight beholders and gauths in the game? there are lots of beholder threads here, you may want to do some search.

anyway,
traps will help (bunch of skull traps and delay fireballs)
send Aerie to deal with them (with the Amulet and robe of venca; buffed up appropriately: SI, remove fear, ring of free action etc...or ). leave everyone in the other side.

or the easiest, striaghtforward way, let your fighter equip the cloak or the shield to slaughter them.

I did not do the unseeing eye quest in this game, but I killed quite a few beholders, but not 5 of these type of opponents at the same time. I'll try the other way then, I thought that one of the enemies would drop it. Thanks for the help.

I reckon you didn't clean out the beholers in the underdark either (otherwise you should've had experience facing more beholders at once).

as Dace De'Briago pointed out, you don't have to kill them, especially your party already hit the exp cap, no use gathering more exp.

No I did not clean out beholders in the underdark, I did not even know there were any there. Would I be missing out on any items if I don't kill the group in hell?

no, you'll not miss anything. Beholders and gauths don't drop things; only plot-required ones will drop something (quest item), and those in hell are not plot-required.

Make sure to mouse around and look for the "Use This Device" pointer, it's 2 arrows forming an ellipse.

Thank you Six, although I already knew that, how could I have gotten this far in the game without it?
