This is my first post so hello to everyone,I'm having a little trouble with my copy of Baldurs Gate II, after the game has been running for about five minutes I get a beeping sound coming out of my PC stack,I dont get this problem with any other games.
It's not really interfering with the game play ,it's just annoying the hell out of me and making it difficult to concentrate ,has anyone else here had a similar problem?,and if so how can I fix it?. |

first of all
WELCOME TO IRONWORKS I had a similar problem this summer. My PC was running close to max. CPU temperature and Baldur's Gate would push him over the edge. Since you're from Australia I assume you've got summer now and CPU overheating may well be the problem. Look up your Mainboard sensors or install MotherBoardMonitor to check your CPU temperature. If it really is too high then either get a better cooling system or try software cooling (e.g. CPUidle). P.S.: Is your name really "Horst Wessel"? If so I apologize for the question, if not I don't think it's an appropriate joke/statement (unless you're referring to the philosophy professor at Berlin's Humboldt university ![]() [ 11-10-2003, 06:55 AM: Message edited by: Faceman ]

Thanks for the feedback Faceman, now that you mention it my fans are working overtime and it has been a little warm down here over the last few days ,I'll give it a go.
Would the beeping noise be coming from the graphics card, sound card or the motherboard?,or could it be anyone of these?. As for the name ,no I'm not named Horst Wessel, it's not a joke or a political statement,it's just the name that I gave to my Fighter character in Baldurs Gate,it could easily have been Wolfgang or Beowulf or any other strong sounding name, I'm sorry if I've caused you any offence, coming from the country that you do I can understand your sensitivity,I had assumed that most people would be unaware of the name or it's conotations. |

The beeps normally come from the motherboard. If you look up your manual or the manufacturers homepage you can determine what they mean. It may be overheating in this case but there are a lot of other beep codes for e.g. RAM failure, graphics adapter not connected properly, etc.
As for the name: As long as it's not a political statement I'm not offended. I'm just kind of sensitive to this topic, as in my country "Wiederbetaetigung" (such as openly displaying swastikas for example) is a felony and the Horst-Wessel-song also falls in that category. But after all it's just a name and (as I mentioned above) can be worn by anybody. Like for example philosopher Horst Wessel [ 11-10-2003, 09:07 AM: Message edited by: Faceman ]

Quote:
Horst Wessel, born in 1907, was German nationalist and later on an active member of the SA (the paramilitary wing of the NSDAP). In 1929 he fell in love with an ex-prostitute and started living with her which caused some problems with his landlady. So the woman called in a favor from the Communist paramilitarians who ambushed Wessel at home. One of them - possibly the girls ex-pimp - shot Wessel and, as a later arriving friend of Wessel did not allow a present Jewish doctor to treat him, Wessel died of blood poisoning shortly after arriving at the hospital. After this incident Wessel became an icon for the Third Reich and especially or the SA, mainly through Goebbel's pormotion (Hitler showed his lack of admiration for Wessel by not attending his funeral). The Horst-Wessel song became the SA's inofficial hymn and many a place, street, ship or Jagdgeschwader was named after him. The Horst Wessel song still is a classic among Neonazis everywhere.

You may call it exaggerated or touchy, but I also had to frown reading your member name. If it's a joke it is definitely one in bad taste, even though many people outside Germany or Austria may not know Horst Wessel. It's still a historical fact that he was a Nazi myth and people from very problematic political background still use the infamous song named after him as political propaganda.
If you are on this forum for a longer time you will learn that the spirit around here does not go along well with things like that and maybe you understand that a change of your displayed name will fit better. Beside of that: Welcome to IW!!!

Hm. The Horst Wessel story is a new one to me, and I while I myself am not offended by it (especially considering that Neo-Nazi sentiments would be rather unlikely coming from an Australian--just don't go mistreatin' the abos, now), I can imagine that some people here might be. To avoid negative feelings caused by unwelcome (and unintended) connotations, I think a simple name change would probably be in order. Even if you have to re-register completely from scratch, you lose--gasp!--a whopping 2 posts.

I've worked out what the beeping problem was,I,ve got a Logitech cordless mouse with a recharger base, the base plugs into two sockets in the back of my PC I unplugged one of them and the beeping stopped.
It only ever did this with Baldur's gate II so I'm not sure about the reason for it,I'll just leave the socket unnpluged ,it dosen't seem to cause any problems. |
