I made an assasin because I wanted to do backstab. But I've encountered a problem... my assasin won't backstab!! That is, the backstab multiplyer only works about 1 out of 10 times when I'm striking while invisible. Could anyone tell me what's wrong? Is it a bug or do assasins just suck... or have I done something wrong???

I can assure you that Assassins do not suck

Backstab Checklist
 • Your rogue is invisible my means of any invisibility spell, a potion of invisibility or by hiding in the shadows
 • You are using a melee weapon that any single class thief can use (quarter staff, dagger, short sword, katana, scimitar, long sword, club)
 • The weapon you are using isn't class restricted (e.g. the Scarlet Ninja-To)
 • The enemy you are attacking is backstabbable (many enemies in BG2 cannot be backstabbed - check the text in the feedback window - it will tell you if the backstab has failed)
 • You are behind the enemy
 • Your attack bonus is great enough to overcome the armour class of the enemy - i.e. you actually hit them (turn on to-hit rolls under feedback options and keep an eye on the feedback window to see which attacks rolls hit and which ones miss).
If you follow all of the above, you will be successful in dealing a crippling blow to the enemy.

Just have to accentuate the importance of making sure you actually hit the enemy's back (stand behind him). Enemy assassins may stab you no matter where they're positioned, but you have to abide by the rules

You should just think of it like this: To backstab a creature, you must stab their back. Just turn the word around to figure it out. It wouldn't really make sense to backstab someone in the chest, although attacking assassins can do that.
It wouldn't, yet enemies do it all the time and there's no "cheststab triple damage" message there when Neb's nasty cutter enters your front for 20dmg
