I'm curious about something, and I'm wondering if maybe its just me. To make it short I was in Baldur's Gate and battling a mage in a house when he cast horror on us before I use a resist fear spell and everyone but one of us started wandering aimlessly in the house. Out of ALL of those meandering around this guy he picks me out of the crowd and proceeds to pummel me. This isn't the first time and I am wondering if the bad guys target the main character above all else, do I have a "Kick Me" sign on my back?

My impression is, that most opponents fight the char, which they see first. Sometimes i find it very hard to remove 1 char from the battle line and "convince" the monster to hack on another character. They often follow quite a time

They do attack the first person they see, the person which the game imagines to be first in their line of sight. So that's why if I play a mage (or another weak melee character) I tend to let someone else lead the party, Minsc or Khalid for example, so they can soak up the damage.

That's pretty much the case Mellagar, though if you think about it it could work to your advantage too. If one character is getting preferential treatment, then run them around whilst your other characters pound on the attacker. It can take the computer a little while to work that out and turn around. Do it quickly and effectively enough, and they don't have time.

Usually, enemies attack the first person they see, and continue to attack that person as long as they can still see him. But any enemy will give up the chance to fire an arrow at Party Member A if they have an opportunity to stab Party Member C.
There are exceptions to this, though. For instance, I must have reloaded the battle with Aec'Letec about 5 times, and every single time he went for Imoen first, even though my Tank was right out in front. Did he sense that she had the weakest AC of the party? Perhaps. Was he mad at her for already Stealthing into the room to cast Fireballs a couple of times? Also a good possibility.
