How is it possible for the Lich's to get off so many spells at the begining of a fight? I swear it seems like they must have 5 or 6 defensive spells already cast. That must be some super ultra contigency/spell trigger combo.

Liches have the same limitations that the players do regarding sequencers and contingencies, but there's nothing in the rules saying that a lich can't make another spell sequencer or contingency once the previous one has been cast.

(I haven't seen a lich cast one, not that I can recall anyway, but there's an enemy-only spell in the game called "tattoo of power" that works like a sequencer/contingency.)

And who's to say that the lich didn't already have all his/her protections on and only thought to tell you about them when you started pounding? Serves us right for all those pre-battle buffing spells, eh?

Don't whine about it. Do something about it. Whining only makes your party dead.

I actually don't buff my party at all. And I don't mean to seem like I am whining, I just thought it odd that they have more protection spells cast than seem possible with the spells listed. I usually found that using Daystar and a Sunray kills them before they have a chance.

The Lich is undead. They've been refining their casting abilities far longer than most mages.

Here's a Lich description from my D&D Monster's Manual:

The Lich is, perhaps, the single most powerful form of undead known to exist. They seek to further their own power at all costs and have little or no interest in the affairs of the living, except where those affairs interfere with their own.

Lich's Magic:

The aure of magical power which surrounds a Lich is so potent that any creature of fewer than 5 Hit Dice (or 5th Leve) which sees it must save vs. spell or flee in terror for 5-20 (5d4) rounds.

The magical nature of the Lich and its undead state make it utterly immune to Charm, Sleep, Enfeeblement, Polymorph, Cold, Electricity, Insanity, or Death spells.

Important:

A Lich is able to employ spells just as it did in life. It still requires the use of its spell books, magical components, and similar objects. It is important to note that most, if not all, Liches have had a great deal of time in which to research and create new magical spalls and objects. Thus, adventurers should be prepared to face magic the likes of which they have never seen before when stalking a Lich. In addition, Liches are able to use any magical objects which they might possess just as if they were still alive.

So you see, Firestormalpha makes a genuine point when he says that it is perfectly alright for Liches to be so powerful.

it shoudl be like in IWD where you had to destroy Lich`s "cup" with his soul in it... becuase his "psyhical" form is seperated from his soul. Imagine big K. comes after you...

Don't mind Firestormalpha that much: he has little empathy. Maybe a little late but, welcome to IW Pyrethrin!

Well you see, the lich is an undead mage with grand magical prowess, as Dadams1 so nicely cited! So it has many special abilities. Besides having sequencers and contingencies and tattoos of power, they are also immune to level 5 and lower spells plus they have immunity against normal weapons and tend to cast protection-from-magical-weapons/mantle/improved-mantle/abolute-immunity on themselves. And those cannot be dispelled with breach, because thats a level 5 spell. Sure you can use Daystar to clean up the mess for ya, but if you try to beat a Lich 'fair-and-square' and succeed, you'll end up feeling a lot more satisfied!

Why so you consider using Daystar to be unfair. I am just using the swords ability. As soon as I see a Lich I use Daystar, if it's sunray goes off before timestop it has killed the Lich outright. I don't see it as unfair or cheese to use a weapon as it was designed. Not to sound argumentative, I am just wondering about your opinion.
