some fighter and some spell caster perhaps? or you could dual/multiclass to be like fighter/thief and mage/cleric. whatever you feel most comfortable with, a tad bit slower leveling character(though with 2 players, it doesnt make much of a difference, believe you me) or faster leveling single classed characters(with fewer skills)

Take some single class that has some abilities of another class.
Do you both play well? If you are experienced players, try having a ranger and a sorcerer. Or a paladin and a bard. You will have hard times somewhere, but your high levels should compensate on that. Good luck!

yes, i think you would do well with a pally and a bard. not to mention a sorc and ranger, though the ranger could be swaped for swashbuckler perhaps...

You can of course choose any combination. Decide if you want to try something challenging or if you'd rather be able to get through the game more quickly. I played a 2 person game as a stalker paired with an assasin once. There were several times where we had to use reload a lot, before we found a way to win a battle, but that was part of the fun. We wanted a no spells party, so we ignored the spells the stalker eventually gained.
*Note: Anyone interested in using two backstab capable characters--proper method to attack to ensure both backstabs strike against a single foe is to bracket your target. One person stands in front and one in back. The "back"stabber attacks first, and when they hit, the front one attacks. This way, the first backstab is as normal, and the enemy will turn to face stabber #1, turning their back to stabber #2 just in time. Trying to time attacks to have both stabbers hit at once is a real nightmare. One thing we did find is that it is NOT critical to have clerical magic in a two person game. If you are only dividing the healing potions between two people, you have a lot more per person. You can also afford to spend money buying healing potions when you get low. My advice is to have at least one person who has good fighting skills, and can handle melee combat well (someone with decent hp and capacity to get a low AC) The other person can be pretty much anything else. Definitely consider having someone be at least part thief. It's not necessary to have a thief to deal with locks and traps, but it is a whole lot more convenient.

Don't forget that the tank doesn't have to be a warrior. It can be a mage, fighter/mage or a bard. These are even better.
Clerical magic is far more than a simple healing. Protection spells (especially negative plane), removing spells (paralisys, restoration) are pretty good. Buffs as Iron Skins or Bless can make a difference between winning and losing. Then again, high levels bring good saves.

Yeah. That is challenging. Even try Fighter/Barbarian, because the inquisitors have some very important spells. I'll try
