I mean cmon. I know many of you prefer humans elves or half elves and all the other taller and stronger races. But have thee ever tried a gnome. I mean hey it can be xciting be fun! I was like that too I thought gnomes suck cause they are small and make up bad jokes. After I played a gnome Barbarian (joking duh) Gnomes only disadvantage is they are not as wise. They make good sorcerors wizard and I think pretty good warriors they suffer no strength bonus right? So I am just saying is try out a gnome and you will be surprised indeed. But I gotta admit this the most powerful Bhaal spawn is a gnome heh

alright, maybe i will try a gnome! but it won't be for awhile, i'm having too much fun as a human thief. all you gotta do is become a thief, give him HUGE pickpocketing skills, and you'll have a hell of a time!!!

Actually it's nice to be reminded of the different races - usually I've been a human (bard, kensai//thief, sorceror, cleric, undead huntress) and now I'm an elf (archer)... I have to remember to try out the other RACES too, not just the classes. Of course several classes are limited to humans.

I might try a gnome fighter/illusionist one of these days... that might work - try attacking a whole mob of undead while I'm cloaked with Stoneskin/Blur/MirrorImage/ImprovedInvis? might be fun...

Just remember not to go above 250, or thou shalt be struck by the pickpockets curse.

And Mahlennacht, a Human thief? tsk tsk.
Halfling is the only way to go.

And I agree that Gnomes make the best mages, if you're willing to give up necromancy that is.

I'm actually one of those pesky people who generally play a half-elf, but my absolute fav character in BG 1 was a female gnomish ftr/thief named EveningStar.....she was soooo bad! Still receive a lot of ribbing about her, but I wouldn't give her up for anything (am going to take her thru SoA and ToB when I get back to them).

I think Gnomes are ok, not much else. They can sure be good Rogues, as well as Warriors, but not as Mages. It's really a bad thing that they can only be illusionists.

Actually, the biggest advantage of being a Gnome is the bonus to Saves.
It's based on CON. At 18+ CON, Gnomes, Dwarves and Halflings all get +5 to saves vs. spells, which is by far the most important one.
This cannot be overstated. +5!

Dwarves and Halflings get +5 to Death and Wands as well, Gnomes get +5 to Wands.

This is especially important if you solo.

too add to the save bonus if you're playing a mage the bonus is great as you already have awesome saves vs spells (and if playing a mage/thief you cna get UAI and cast the illegal spells from a scroll)

True - yeah, I WAS interested in the Halfling thief's bonuses, I plan to be a halfling when I play a straight thief.

I was a Human only because I wanted to dual-class - Kensai(8)//Thief; I just wanted to be a maniac w/ CelestialFury/Kai/4xBackstab Loved it. Heh.

Because they miss out on spells like skull trap, Abi dazim's Horrid wilting? They have PI, Mislead and other illusion goodies to make it up 4 it on a flipside. Let's think positively, even if it happens to be a game.
