Default Thoughts on Portraits

Let me first make clear that I do not--do not--want to downplay or dismiss the work of Uatu, Dinonykous, or anyone else involved. What art I've seen, I've liked.

But it occurs to me that more portrait options are always good. The BG series has a number of good portraits on it's own, and people over at G3 have added their own portrait packs as well. Some of that stuff could be very useful, I think.

You should check out Ziroc's galleries here at Ironworks - his DC art section has quite a number of portraits that might fit into this category. Also, Steve McDonald's site has a large number that fit into this category as well.

Uatu and Dinonykos (if I may be so bold to speak for them) make art because they like to and are skilled at it. They make portraits because they do not find the images that they want but know that they can make them.
For my own 'art' as well, I enjoy doing it, and I can't find anything like it that is exactly what I want.
On our respective fan sites, you will only find our own original artwork because, well, we didn't make any of the other graphics.

I'm fine with people using whatever they want for portraits. In Harri Polsa's designs, he used screen caps from television and movies.

Officially, DC won't use any graphics that it does not have explicit permission to use. I realize the odds of someone over at Blizzard or one of the artists even seeing our stuff is remotely small, but it doesn't change that it's their work. So, for official releases because we can't take any chances with copyright violation, DC can't use those images. But, I'm only talking about the official stuff. I would in no way ever try and tell fans what they can or can't do, and personally I'm not against using other artists materials, especially of famous and/or unique characters that one would be using to essentially create a fan 'tribute' to.

It would seem that there might be a niche open for someone to start converting some of this art to DC formats if she were so inclined.

Oh, another issue that I have, is that I work with a higher resolution than most and that means I have to stretch the BG or IW images to fit.

What I should do is get around to uploading the DC art that I've converted for use with BG/IW and NWN. I've got a bunch of it on my hard drive somewhere.

Yeah - mostly I make portraits because:

1. The copyright thing Original art is always better in this regard.
2. It's fun! It's also nice to have a "unified feeling" for the art, which is easier to get if you make it yourself

Oh I was always in favor of new portraits by people. I just also wanted the maximum possible number of portrait options.

More is (almost) always better.

If you wanted to convert some, I am positive they would be well received by the community.

I'm with Uatu about the all the fun. Several times, I've considered 'retiring' from the DC official project just so I could focus on art, and if CocoaSpud or Tarlanon were active, I probably would (I mean posting at least a couple of times a month in one of the venues if not putting out code). But, alas, someone has to be the admin. To be honest, I don't mind doing it at all, I just have a lot going on (as we all do, I know) and don't feel that I can devote the time to official DC and manikus DC.

But, hey, I'm on X-mas break right now, so I should have plenty of time (as soon as I fix my desktop) to do it all.

And we're all in it for fun, and the sooner we get to 1.0, the sooner more fun will be had by all.
