Have a question regarding cleric spell levels in IWD2 as described in the game manual. What's the meaning when the manual gives the levels for both cleric and specialist cleric spells for a particular spell?

Eg:

- Wall of Moonlight (Drd 4, Selune 5) means that a druid gains this spell at Level 4, while a cleric of Selune (and only this type of cleric) gets it at Level 5, and no other cleric can cast this spell, right?

- Resurrection (Clr 7, Lathandar 8) means that all clerics *except* a cleric of Lathandar gets the spell at Level 7, whilst the latter gets it at level 8, right? (BTW, I thought druid and cleric spells are maxed at spell level 7? Or are 3E rules different from 2E rules in this respect?)

- Santuary (Clr 1, Selune 1) - what does this mean? I mean, it says that a cleric gets this as a Level 1 spell. So doesn't the cleric of Selune (which *is* a cleric) get this at Level 1 as well? Why mention the deity specifically? Or am I totally off in my interpretation of the manual?

Ummm, no, not quite.

Clerics have two sets of spells. The first set has all the usual spells that any priest can use. The second set is specific to a deity, and there are two spells per spell level, of which you can choose one to memorize. So a spell shown as "Selune 5" means that a cleric of Selune can choose this spell when he/she is able to cast 5th level spells. This is in addition to the usual bunch of cleric spells that a priest can have ready.

Thanks for the reply. You mean to say that clerics and druids don't automatically get all the spells when they reach the appropriate level?
I've ploughed thru' the manual, and I don't recall seeing anything about this.

Also, what do you mean when you say that clerics have 2 sets of spells? Say armor of Faith (Clr 1, Helm 1). In what way is the Helm version of the spell differebt from the run-of-the-mill cleric one? More potent?

$@#$&* darn 3E rules. I wish someone could post something that highlights the differences b/w 2E & 3E.

Question Mark

You see, Clerics have, Cleric and Domain Spells. Just like Nightowl2 said domain spells are specific to a certain diety such as Bane or Talos.

Cleric spells are your normal spells, which all clerics can cast. But Domain spells are extra spells that a "specialists" cleric gets.

A Priest of Lathandar can cast Resurrection when he is able to cast 7th level spells, but he can also cast Resurrection, when he reaches 8th domain level...

That is as far as I can say, I might have repeated what Nightowl2 said, so sorry in advance...

I am not sure if domain spells are more potent...

Hayashi, sorry I wasn't clear on that. It looks like 9_1_6 has answered your question, though. Clerics get extra spells and abilities as perks related to their specific deity. These are in addition to the usual spells they receive.

I hope this is more understandable now. What they really did with the rules was to beef up the cleric class a little, by giving them some extra abilities, that's all.
