Sacked solicitor awarded £30,000
A solicitor who was sacked for being pregnant has been awarded £30,000 compensation. Harriet Davies-Taheri won her claim for unfair dismissal from a Sheffield law firm, Proddow Mackay, in March. She brought the claim for unfair dismissal against the firm after being sacked from her job just weeks after becoming pregnant. An employment tribunal decided a claim for sex discrimination, two for unfair dismissal and one for wrongful dismissal had all succeeded. Story from BBC NEWS: Couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of people

1. Did she get her Job back? 2. How much of the 30k did she get and how much did her lawyer (barrister?) get? 3. Did she have a contract that stipulated anything about pregnancies? It does seem odd that a company these days would try something so stupid. |

This reminds of a case here in the States I saw a story on TV about recently. A woman at a maternity cloths company sued claiming she was fired due to pregnancy. You defintely would have thought they knew better.
Here is the first googled link I could find on the story, I know its a feminist site, so it may be biased: http://www.feminist.org/news/newsbyt...ry.asp?id=7910 |

1. She can decide whether to go back to her job or not. 2. She gets all of the 30k because she gets Legal Aid from the state to pursue her claim. 3. She doesn't need to have anything in her contract. It's part of British law that you cannot discriminate against a woman because she's pregnant. She can start work on a Monday and walk into your office with a form to confirm her pregnancy. She is then protected under the law. She gets time off for ante-natal care and after the birth she will get at least 90% of her weekly wage for the 1st 6 weeks and £100 per week for the next 20 weeks. All paid by the state. That's why it's amazing that a solicitor should do this.

Ahh well the # 1 and 2 lines make absolute sense. As for #3, is it not possible for a company to hire say ...a well a swimsuit model and require a contract that says that you will not get pregnant during a particular phase of her employment? I know its not too common, but I have heard of it in a few instances here in the states. |

You aren't even allowed to ask about existing children at an interview.
