ok, about 45 minutes ago, my computer sounded really strange....you know what a heart rate moniter sounds like? that was the sound it made, the beep...beep... thing, and then it would not restart for awhile, now it lags really bad, I am running a virus scanner, and going to run adware and spy bot as soon as I am throough with the virus, FYI, I was sitting on the couch watching the movie showtime, when this started, I thought it was on the tv, my brother said to call him back if it flatlines any idea what caused this?

edit, now to add to it, the screen sarted flashing white :/ the vurus scanner is still running but nothing detected yet

Not a clue here. Maybe some of your computers components are dying?

maybe a shortage of RAM memory. This happens when you're running software programs that eat up RAM. Could be the case with running a virus scanner or anything that scans or searches. Let it run its course and when its done scanning, recheck your machine. Also deleting old files like Temp files and emtying trash might also do the trick. I know that when I ran my Spybot or Adaware, it eats up RAM. Later on when you get a chance, you can also defrag your system after deleting old files you no longer needm, this includes uninstalling unused programs. Just a thought. Hope things work out for you Stormy.

Although it *Could* be bad recource management, it sounds to me like parts of your machine are in their death throes. if your monitor is flashing white then that could be the monitor, graphics card, or ram. the sound coming from the hard disk is probably its way of telling you its about to give up the ghost.

the only other possiblity i can think of is overheating, although that is unlikely. best test is to take the side off your case (while its off) and then run it open for a while. if the symptoms subside or go away, then you have an airflow problem, but my money is on dying componants

edit for spelling and grammar

If your computer is anything like mine then it would probably be the motherboard making that sound. It may be a warning sound to tell you something bad is happening with your hardware. It might have been that your CPU was overheating and automatically shutting down or something, but I'm fairly sure it wasn't a software problem.

strange thing is, after letting it set for about 10 minutes, before posting this, the sound stopped, and the screen has not flashed since the one time when I mae the post, so it probably was over heating..it seems to have been on for a long time, so I guess i need to start remembering to turn it off when I go to bed at night

you may want to get a can of condensed air as well and open the case up and blow any dustbunnies to smitherenes that you happen to come across. Blow it around the processoer cooling coils and fans and what have you. Just dont tip the can upside down. If you have never done this and you have had the computer for a while, take it outside to do it or you will be swimming in a dust cloud.

Good luck
