Sunglass Man Old school RPG

Was roaming around and found a great old school RPG. Its in the style of Ultima and Wizardry and I got hooked on the demo ( and may buy it). Its called Eschalon: Book 1. Check it out and its compatible with mac and Linux

you can find similar games on spiderwebsoftware.com

Geneforge and Avernum are pretty good, and they're compatible with Mac if you're of a mind to use their OS.

It sure looks exactly like the kind of game I like! In fact, I'm just playing MM7 right now. I just downloaded it and I'll give it a look...

It would have been nice to know the system requirements in advance though, since my PC is 4-5 years old.

I've been playing it since yesterday and it's quite good! The only thing I have a problem with is, that there doesn't seem to be a map of the area you are currently in.
This means a lot of aimless wondering and wasting time.

You need 1 point in cartography to get the auto map to work. It also took me a while to figure out if you left shift you can attack chests, doors, barrels, etc. But you run the risk of breaking your weapon. I found fire bolt works great for that ( and it doesn't count as a burglary)

Yeah, I hit F1 for the help menu and it told me that about the barrels etc. I just noticed the cartographic skill at lvl up. I just made lvl 6 and can't do much more.

I am tempted to buy it. Have you bought it; either by download or by ordering it?

Ok, I bought it!
The only thing I don't like so far, is that you can't switched from your melee weapon to your ranged weapon while a shield is equipped. So you have to do it manually every time: really stupid!

Cool. I'm planning on buying it on Monday ( working mids 12 hours for the entire weekend). Got a quick question: do the saved games from the demo carry over when you buy it? My wizard is actually doing better than my ranger.

In most such games i.e. the spiderweb softwares variations of that style of game, yes.

usually they just send you a key code of some kind and there's somewhere to enter it in the main menu. There are probably other ways to do it too. They may send some kind of patch file or something. But all around I suspect that they wouldn't punish you for buying their product by making you start from scratch.

Yup,
They all carry over! I actually started new because I wanted something slightly different.

I recommend saving before opening barrels and chests, because it is random. If it's empty, or you don't like what you get, try again!

Also, save before picking locks, as they have a chance to brake.

My guy is mainly a cleric. He's just coming up to lvl 4.

Oh, and there's no code key with this one. You just pay, and within 5 minutes you get a link to download from. It's only 100megs!

Load times are excellent btw.
