For somebody that has two daughters, this is a future worry of mine. I hope I am up to the task of doing the right things when it comes time for these types of pressures in their lives. At the moment, I have no idea how I would handle it as a parent. It appears that I have as little as five years to get ready.
OMG...five years...

Larry, I just got married in September. While I've always wanted kids, things like this make me want to rethink things over...

How is this surprising? Don't people, you know, observe things any more? Just sit yourself down at a mall someday...

I watched a documentary once where they showed little girls and how they wear make-up, sexy clothes, etc. There was an 8-year-old girl there that shaved her legs, and wore make-up (not that much though), and some others that wore push-up bras (though they had nothing to push up). Some of those girls dressed more sexy and wore more make-up than me and my friends do, and I'm 23... I was amazed their parents let them. My mum didn't let me wear make-up (apart from lip-gloss) until I went to highschool (14-15 years old)... now I see children wearing make-up.. Scary.

Nice work of the corporations, something tells me they're doing this for a reason.

Boy howdy, ya just gotta love capitalism.
The truly surprising part is that people are shocked by this sort of marketing, as if it just started last month. The 'tween' demographic is a marketers wet dream; these kids have some independence in decision-making, have some access to money, and are easily influenced by advertising. Why does this occur, is it an evil conspiracy? The decay of western civilisation? Too much rock music? Secular humanism? No, it's because the kids have money. A few generations ago, kids that age didn't have the access to money that these kids have now, so they weren't a target market. But now that there's a profit to be made, anything goes. And we're all about the dollar. As Ronny Reagan said, "The business of America is business." And yes, we will pimp our own kids for a buck. |

Quote:
I know that I am still a kid in some sence, being 16, but younger kids, who know about such things as in the article is untrue. The quote above, said by a 12 year old? God, I never knew the extent to how much knowledge kids had was so... bad. I know that they will find out eventually and that its just a natural thing, but y'know. At 12 years old, I had no idea about 'blue braclets' (I detest that term so im not going to say it) or anything like that, and I thank God I didn't! This is a really passionate subject for me as I dislike the rate of 'aging' nowadays and the amount of knowledge kids have, and the actions of teenagers in society. Many of my friends, both guys and girls that are my age have done a hell of a lot of things at such a young age. Im not saying im a prude, because equally I have done a few things myself, but that was with my boyfriend, who I have been going out with for 3 years and only very recently decided to do anything like that with. I wanted to make sure I was ready, and that the person I was with I had strong feelings for. I know people who have been at parties and do these things, an example is someone who went into a random field on the outside of a house where a party was. This girl went into the field with two other guys and well, not to go into detail but I think you can imagine for yourselves. And that is at 16! But, I suppose in society today, its just a part of growing up. --Kestrel--
