I wanted to ask this since I was a boy. I'm especially interested in responses from all of you living in the USA.
I do suspect something, therefore I don't want to say anything about Karl May right now...

Yes, right JC.
The reason for my question is, that he wrote a lot of adventure novels, dealing with cowboys an indians. Did you ever hear the name Winnetou? Or Old Shatterhand?

Ah, memories I've read some of them ... let's see ... 25-26 years back. They made a couple of movies in 60's after his books too (starring Lex Barker as Old Shatterhand, i think).
I've read someplace that he wrote all of his books in prison and never saw the lands he was writting about.

Well as far as I know he travelled a lot (except the times he's been in prison).

So far there's been some european answers. I'm really anxious to the answers coming from overseas...

You did? I had no idea, that anybody else than germans do know him. Somehow I always had the feeling, if an american would begin reading these books, the next thing would be him/her ROFL. I can't explain why though.

A German author of a lot of western books. The stories about Winnetou and old shatterhand were sold to Hollywood. I saw all those movies when i was younger.

Hollywood Are you sure about that??? I saw the movies too - of course. But as far as I know they are all european productions. Coproduced by Germany, Italy and other european countries.
