Anyone else think it is a horrible shame that Ted Turner has completely taken control of many of the classic cartoons that we grew up with and has outright banned the showing of many of them due to his desire to be politically correct? While cartoons may or may not be of great historic value, they do represent the differences in our american culture and its changes over the years. I think it is important that cartoons like Bugs Bunny, Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry be preserved unsullied by political correction and censorship, just as we preserve our more serious works of art and entertainment, like GOne with the Wind, the works of Mark Twain and the paintings of the Great artists of history.

Im so sad about this dork being such a DH about the things I grew up with as part of my environment.

Here are a couple of links.

DARN TIMEWARNER! DARN THEM! Why do they thing they can take any ol' animation and edit it to display it, it's bad enoguh with putting bathing suits on Tenchi characters and taking everyitng including the music out of DBZ + the really messed up showings of OLD and Crappy anime shows ignoring the new ones (Ok they did Cowboy beebop and gundam 0083 right BUT THAT WAS IT) These people need to realie that cartoons arent just something kids cherish and enjoy and we should stop trying to market them in America to a younger audience. I think it would do us all a big favor... that and we need to get some more translated manga published! even a few Dojins!

A friend of mine lives in Montana, and TT bought a ranch up there, about 200,000 acres. All the ranchers that rented grazing rights were called to a meeting in Missoula and they showed up with their contracts. TT didn't show, of course, all that happened is this smartass New York lawyer comes in and says, "Mr. Turner's compliments, gentlemen, and all of your cattle are to be off of his property in thirty days." It seems that he wanted to introduce a herd of buffalo. He is really hated up there.

I agree Magik. Well I wasn't aware about the cartoons, but any censorship like this is petty and insulting to everyone, including those who are supposedly being protected IMHO. Anyone who read Enid Blyton books when they were younger will be pleased to know that Noddy and The Faraway Tree books are being revised - removal of golliwogs and brownies among other completely small-minded things

Ukk. I can understand certain censorships, like some of the more racist bugs bunny episodes made during WW2, but if they're not going to show them, then don't show them. Don't edit out the parts that were there. After all, they're our view on pop culture during that time, it's like revisionist history. When people like Ted Turner start to decide what we can and can't watch, thus begins social engineering. I don't object to him not putting them on because of ratings but honestly. Its kinda scary knowing that him and 5 others control something like 95% of US broadcast. Bah.

This sort of stuff really makes me *hiss* !!

I wonder what prompted such a decision? Has someone or some group jumped up and down stating how offensive this early animation is? Is legal action threatened? You can't alter the past by changing the present.

We may not have been as 'politically correct' then, but looking at current animation, who is to say we are any better now? We still have animation loaded with sterotypes.
