Do I want to keep all of my planar sphere apprentices alive and get 50,000 XP or do I want the Robe of Apprenti so I can set my base AC to 3, sell the bracers of defense AC 3 that I'm currently wearing and be able to use other bracers? Or should I keep all my magelings alive?

I'd go for the robe. Experience is always available to you - often it is staring you right in the face. Good items not so

Mages would do better to wear the Robe of Vecna, which lowers your spellcasting speed. The Robe of the Apprenti merely lowers your AC, which you can do with spells anyway. Save the apprenti--what did they do to deserve being sent to a meaningless death, eh?

Oh. I was under the impression that the Robe of Apprenti went in the cloak slot (of course, then it would probably be called the Cloak of Apprenti wouldn't it?) I currently have the Robe of Vecna and I'm not giving that up for anything. Oh well, I guess I might as well take the XP.

It's not much of a mage robe, frankly. Buy the Robe of Vecna, instead: that speeds up your casting, and can make a tremendous difference in battle.

Typically, I go for the Ring, which kills two apprentices, leaving one to graduate and keep working in the sphere, producing potions on a weekly basis. All you need is a single apprentice for this to occur.
