Every time I've tried to use oil of speed from my quick items, I've gone "glug" and gotten confused. Is there some trick to using it, or is this just a nasty practical joke? It ain't funny when you're trying to waltz with the Doomsayer.

This happened to me too in the begining. I was so siked when I found one. If you notice in the very begining, when you pick up Imoen, she has one. It is a thin white bottle, the real Mcoy. The cursed one is a multi-colored round one. Don't worry, eventually you can buy all you want.

There are various types of cursed Potions floating around the game--always be sure to examine things before you drink them; there's even a Potion that can Petrify you if you drink it and fail your Save.

what angered me is how similar the cursed potion of healing and the potion of strength look.

Best way to spot a cursed potion:
Right-click on it in the inventory screen. The description will look normal until the end, where it says something to the effect of "this potion doesn't look very good..." and that's your tipoff. Believe it or not, cursed potions sell at more than 1gp at places (I've sold them to Thalyntyr and Sorc Sundries with no problems).

Best way to spot a cursed scroll:
A good portion of the protection spells you find are cursed. If you don't want to waste an ID on a scroll, give the scroll to the character with the highest lore in your party (bards, mages, and elves, I believe, have high lore). A character with high lore should be able to ID pretty much anything you come across. But if the character doesn't identify it with lore, 10 to 1 it's a cursed scroll.

I went back to Thalantyr and bought one back. Xan could not run an identify spell on it. Foo!
