ok now im playing SoA and something annoys me....
in BG1 there are many many many wilderness areas.
in BG2 there is either a little more or a little less than 10 areas. compared to BG1 this is few, are there wilderness areas, or just the ones mapped

Unfortunately, no. the ones mapped are the only ones you get to go to. later in the game, a few new areas appear on your map, but they are all very dull and boring. Thats one thing that makes bg1 perhaps better.

Edit: but we must remember the HUGE amount of work Bioware and co. have put into the dialogue options in the game, which gives a depth of reality which bg1 lacks.

You are very talented at beating my posts by one minute, Zarr. Check the blade spell thread.

An idea for you modders out there - any way to create some wilderness areas like in good old BG I, for sake of xp? I miss those sirens if you know what i mean

It's possible, but unless you want a load of reused area art (I know I don't...), then it's a great deal of work, since each area has to be rendered.

having not played BG1, i thought there were quite a few areas to explore outside of the city. If its exp points you are looking for, there is plenty to be had. minor map spoilers to new players maybe:

D'Arnise Hold, Temple Ruins, Druid Grove, Umar Hills, Trademeet, Windspear (or whatver its called) to name a few. When you first look at the world map, you might only have 1 or 2 places outside the city available.

Still and all, BG2 is a much more "urban-oriented" game compared to BG1, in which you only get to the city in the last chapters of the game. If you count Irenicus' dungeon as being part of Athkatla, then you play 4 out of 7 chapters in and around that city alone. (I also wouldn't classify Trademeet as a "rural setting" by any means...maybe a smaller community, but not rural).

It surely is a great deal of work. But maybe improve the ones already there? (The Small Teeth Pass etc) Not in the way Tacktics did it, surely. 2 dargons are somehow excessive

Wilderness areas introduce some romantic sense in the game. Urban BG II almost lost it. On this particular question I fully agree with Jaheira

Don't forget Brynnlaw, the Underwater City, Ust Natha, the Illithid City, and Suldenessellar. I would classify all of those as "urban."
