Do your eyes ever change colour? Apart from red when you wake up with a hangover that is?
![]() I was just talking to my kids over lunch about eyes and I noticed that my son (now 10) who had the most piercing blue eyes as a kid has now got almost brown eyes (he wears tinted glasses most of the time so I never noticed when it changed till now) he has very poor eyesight and I was wondering how normal this colour change is and why does it happen?

At first I thought this was going in the direction of saying that eye color is perceived differently depending on what one was wearing that day or the atmospheric conditions...but I am glad to see that I guessed wrong.
To answer the question, my mom said I had blue eyes until I was three years old, when they turned green. My mom has blue eyes and my dad has brown eyes. My grandmother and grandfather on my dad's side have brown eyes, as well as many others on that side of my family. My mom's side has blues and browns, but my grandfather on that side has green eyes. What I find intriguing is how dark blue both my girls' eyes were as newborns, and now they have lightened up. I hear that this is common for babies to all have that dark shade of blue as newborns that changes as toddlers to whatever it was meant to be.

Most people (AFAIK) have blue eyes when they're born, and as they grow up, their eyes change to their "natural" color. Both my kids were born with bright blue eyes, and both are now brown (or working their way there).
Me, I've still got blue eyes, although they sometimes pass for grey or green, depending on the mood.

And with the colour change, there's several reasons I can think of that can explain this. The colour of the eye is basically pigment that the body produces (thus albino people don't have it because they're missing that gene- but their eyes appear red because of the colour of blood). So with the blue colour at birth and the changing of colour later- could mean that the pigment making process was delayed, or takes longer to do. Because from what I know children aren't completely developed till like 8-10. So that could be one? The base "blue" could be the recessive gene and the other colour may be the dominant. So When the pigment making begins, the dominant colour overtakes. Another explanantion might be the appearance of both genes (this also happens quite often). So Say its blue and green, its possible that the child is born with blue but as he grows he starts showing alittle bit of both, and results in a blue/green colour. (or the highly unlikely BUT occured- having different eye colours in each eye) |

My eyes routinely change color, actually. Many people think my eyes are dark blue, but when they get closer they notice they're green. It also depends on the current lighting. They used to be completely blue when I was younger, but they became firmly green around 10, which correlates with what Spirits said.

My eyes, as far as I know, have always been brown (my dad and sister have dark brown eyes, my mother blue eyes). But now, some days they are quite bright green, others a dull green, and others pretty brown. I don't know if this 'change' correlates with anything (moods, weather, %alcohol in my blood
![]() And if it makes any difference, I also need glasses. Eyes are - 1.75 and -2.00, but I feel it's -2.00 and -2.25 now (I can see close things with ease, but distance is a problem).

I have trouble describing colours, especially complex ones like eyes where there are more than one colour in there, so working out what colour my eyes are has always been a bit of a problem. But I used to have blue eyes and they are now a sort of blue-gray most of the time, but they have gone slightly green before. Some days they are bluer than others (in a picture of me with my boyfriend, they look very bright blue).

Younger peoples eyes may change colour as discussed and lighting can affect the way ones eyes may look at times but the colour doesn't really change just our perception in that case. When I was younger it was always my hair that was changing colour blond to brown or brown with blond highlights or the reverse.

Apparently, when I was bourne, my mother said I had amaging ice blue eyes. Like, winter mountain blue. Either way, up until I turned ten my eyes had changed to a piercing light green, but now, after all these years, they're back to the blue they originally were.
Hey, I'm not complaining. ![]() |
