Crying My apologies to Developer

I am saying sorry for bombarding the feature request list with my "I want"-s. I am incredibly impressed with DC and what the developers have accomplished so far. I'm sorry to say that, psychologically speaking; it only makes us that much more aware of what we could do with it.

Once again, I know its a dirty job, but we love the fact that you are doing it .

Speaking of school, how's it been going? Have you started learning programming yet?

My program cut the programming requirements in favor of cabling classes. So, now I'm going it on my own which is fine, but it means that I'm not working on it regularly. Fortunately, I have the text book for the next class I would have taken and am pretty good friends with the instructor who has offered to help me out as I need it. Unfortunately, it's not C++ that I'm learning, but I still hope to put out a couple of helpful utilities that will be separate from official DC stuff. I will open source them, though, and I've even toyed around with the idea of starting a group on SourceForge, but so far I'm holding off until I get something in the alpha stage and can figure out a suite of utilities instead of just the one I'm working on.

Well, this is the last week of class, so finals are eating up almost all of my time. But I was only going part time, taking a math class and a writing class; and now I've decided since I've been 4 pointing those I should try and speed up (sooner the better), so I'm taking online classes full time next semester. Its still not going to be programming classes yet but the sooner I get thru the required the sooner I'll start the good stuff . I plan on getting a download of some c++ stuff (you can find editor/compilers online for free, thank you google!!!), and using online tutorials and/or reading a book or two about C++ programming. From what I understand, there are a bunch of languages built based upon the C and C++ syntax. As I am going for a degree in gaming and simulation, I've taken a look on some publisher sites as well as Gamedev.net for job listings to see what kind of knowledge/experience I might need; and doing some research on what skills needed brought up the multi-langs syntax being decended from C.

Sounds good.

I'm working with VB.Net and as soon as I finish the second part of it (the part I'm doing on my own) I'm going to take a class on ASP.Net. So, probably this next summer, I'll be going full time towards my degree and hopefully taking a class on ASP.Net, either online or at the community college, which is actually a lot cheaper. Brick and mortar classes seem like they should be more expensive than online classes.
I'm going for a degree in Networking Systems and starting in March will start in on the bajillions of certifications that I have to get. Good ol' Microsoft has six or seven certs that are relevant to my career path, Cisco has a couple and I need to get two Unix and Linux certification. All of this without the fun of gaming.
I must say I'm a bit jealous, but there aren't too many game design opportunities here, and since my wife and I love the city (Portland OR) I've got to look where the work is.

Well, I'm outta Lansing Michigan, and there sure aren't any jobs like that here, either. I'm not sure if I will move out to California (I REALLY want to) or perhaps I'll xhange my major when I get a lil farther into it. As it is, the core required are the same between the majors of gaming and simulation, Computer information technologies, Computer security, and Computer networking degrees. Its after the core classes that the stuff doesn't all overlap. If I had the $$ (er, financial aid) and the time, I'd go for a dual degree with Computer Info and Networking. The Computer Info degree is almost the same as the gaming, just one or two class diferences (game theory).

So regardless, any way I go I gotta get on this as soon as possible so I'm gonna go full time and not take 5 years to do a 2 year program , also can't wait to earn some money in a field that doesn't involve "special sauce"

I did try to join the gaming industry in Japan once - didn't succeed, but I guess it was a good thing - they are overworked, underpaid, and don't have much space to work in.

Ya, I'm looking forward to not making a living saying, "Can I just have a minute or two of your time?" (Well, I haven't been the one saying that for a couple of years, but you know what I mean.)

In my programming class, my instructor talked about gaming as one of the two areas for coders that are growing, the other being web-based (hence my move to ASP.Net). From what he told us, all of the wireless companies, and some that plan on breaking into wireless, such as Google, are trying to come up with the latest cool games to play on phones/PDAs/Blackberries.

Networking is not as appealing to me, but as it's been put to me, if the bills are paid and you don't hate the job, you'll have even more energy to do what you want. Plus, once I get the hang of it and as long as I'm getting my work done, who's to say what I'm doing on my computer...

Ah - games for handhelds are good, since they aren't hard to make (you can make one yourself, without a team of 50+ people), and they are often still 2D (good for making games like Dungeon Craft, too ).

Ironically enough, FRUA is a bit too low tech for handhelds. Almost all of them (even my phone which is couple of years old) can support a higher resolution and a LOT more colors.
DC for handhelds, though... If only I knew how to code in Java (apparently the vast majority of handheld software is done in Java or Flash).

Wow - such high resolution on those tiny screens? (I have never used a handheld - we only get stupid phones in Japan...)
