Putin planning new nuclear weapons
Moscow - In a television phone-in programme, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the country is planning to bolster its nuclear arsenal. He also believes Russia's conventional forces should be reviewed. He said Russia was rich in raw materials and that this meant strong defences were needed. On Thursday, Russia announced that a new inter-continental ballistic missile had been successfully tested. During the TV programme, Mr Putin also said he would be backing the presidential candidate he found most suitable to succeed him when he has to stand down next year. His preferred candidate in March's poll will benefit from Mr Putin's enormous popularity. However, it is unlikely Mr Putin will leave the political scene as he can still stand for parliament. If successful, this would then make it possible for him to become prime minister. (Rnw.nl) |
