I soloed a mage, then a sorceress all the way through SoA and ToB. Now I solo another sorcerer. And I liked it veeery much But there is a big problem - when I tried to play a melee-oriented class, I found it very boring. And fighters didn't possess the power to match with my sorcs even in the very beginning There seems to exist a psychological barrier between me and fighters

Anybody else encountered such a problem?

A well equipped fighter will take a mage any time - mages depend so much on their magic that Protection from Magic really screws them up. Of course then they have defensive magic, so it (as always) comes down to the skill of the players.

But yes, fighters can seem boring after learning the nuances of magic.

Quibby and his "Time Stop + Shapeshift:Mind Flayer" says bring on the Protection from Magic scrolls.

The old adage has always been that a good defense is an overwhelming offense. Not to say that one should neglect basic defense of course. True enough though, even if a person gets a godly Mage to play with, that person will fail utterly if said person is less than impressive when it comes to spellcasting.

That said and done, I still have fun with Paladins.

I've been partial to fighters and thieves, but I'm playing a Wild Mage right now through SoA/ToB and having a blast. (Literally, sometimes, with those "Wild Surges"!) I really don't have a preference, but it it came down to choosing straws, I'd still say I like the thief classes best.

Cheers,

I actually enjoy playing melee classes more I really enjoy being in the front lines fighting toe to toe with various villains/monsters. I'm really enjoying my dwarf beserker game. I do see your point however, I guess it's a case of whatever floats your boat.

I had this problem with Diablo II, I played a Barbarian first... i thought he was great! Then i played a Necro (back when corpse explosion was still godly) and he totally blew the barbarian away. By the time i got BG2 i loved magic users so much that i've never looked back. I tried to play a paladin, he was dropped after the copper coronet. Plain fighter... didn't even last out of Irenicus' dungeon. Cleric/Fighter... ended up being a summoner/buffer.

the verdict: i'm a magic person

For me it all began in MMVIII, when I recruited a party of necromancers, and buuldozed (literally!) every foe in every location.

In BG series I first played melee classes (the reason is that mages are really weak in BGI - low levels!), then tried to solo a mage...

About scroll of Protection From Magic... Will it protect you from 35-40 Skeleton Warriors or Earth elementals?? I think not.. Of course, it all depends on the playing style and experience of a player.

I can only play a melee class if it's multi- or dualclassed to a thief. I'm currently playing swashbuckler/fighter level 8/9. She (have Kelsey) is not a front line fighter though, I use her longbow more and only if it is necesarry use Sword of Chaos.
