There is no in-game penalty for a fighter with a 3 intelligence. Personally, I would never play such a character because I would have to roleplay him realistically and therefore as someone too stupid to do anything effectively except die. But that's just me.

Yes, there are other worthwhile pickpocket targets, for example Algernon in Feldepost's Inn -- you get a great cloak off of him. And of course don't forget that you can use the pickpocket skill to steal from some stores.

Regarding Drizzt, the items he is famous for are his swords, particularly the Defender sword.

There are lots of things for you to pickpocket. If a NPC has a name. I usually will do a quik save and then try to pick pocket that NPC. He or she will have something about 50% of the time.

.While your in Beregost, there is also a Paladin at inn, found on the southside of town that has a +1 Small Shield, who is fairly easy to pick. Just remember to do a quick save prior to picking him. You can also do his quest and get the shield, but it's more fun to pinch it. Then go and do his quest later for the experience points.

You can pickpocket Volo in Nashkel for a pretty cool gem.

I would recommend charming him (although he has magic resistance I think a high charisma character using a charisma cloak can do it... I seem to recall doing that once but maybe I'm mistaken...) if you can prior to attempting the pickpocket attempt and definitely quicksave (as you no doubt have)! I think all you can get from him is the scrimtar +3. I'm afraid you will have to kill him for the mithil chainmail +4 and the scrimtar +5.

Oh, and if there isn't a penalty for intelligence of 3 there ought to be. As the lowest possible dice roll, in the 'distribution curve' for intelligence it represents profound mental retardation, an IQ below 20-25. You would be nonverbal, incapable of mental abstraction of any kind, and pretty much uncomprehending of the surround.
