I cant decide wether to have a sling throwing daggers or darts because i dont know if later in the game that one is better than the other

( eg putting a profency slot into sling when there are better darts or throwing daggers in the game )

I prefer slings, you can get a sling with AT LEAST +3 in bonuses fairly early in the game, and +2 bullets aren't really rare.

Whereas, with darts the ammo _is_ the weapon, and although they are cheap magical darts aren't that common.

Honestly, with mages I never had mush use for daggers, although there are some nifty magical daggers - one I've seen has a chance of inflicting beltyn's burning blood with each strike - nasty!

Slings and Shortbows are the best ranged weapons if you use them all the time; as you can get varieties of both said weapons which need no ammo.

Biggest problem I've had with darts since I got the game a few years back was that you can only have 60 total in your quick weapons slot, and they go FAST!

I assume you're playing a mage?
If so, I would recommend:
Prof. 1: Staves
Prof. 2: Slings
Prof. 3: Darts
Prof. 4: Daggers

Possibly change darts for daggers if that suits you more.

Slings, definitely. Although I have to say there are a few handy darts out there too - I have been surprised by how useful they sometimes are. Darts of stunning and wounding are especially potent. I'd keep a bit of everything in your inventory, just in case

i prefer my 2 angels to use slings (jaheira and aerie), loading it with bullet +3 or higher makes it a powerful toy for sexy ladies. daggers are very useful for my thieves, good for backstabbing and very effective when matched with abilities. i dont like darts that much, i think they are useless unless you have 4 prof. on it.

What about using throwing (and returning) knives? I have found a couple in the game which aren't all that bad - normal damage of a knife + bonus to hit + magic damage.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but it's almost an year since I last played BG2.

IIRC One of the knives can be found in the bridge district, in a tavern where I found a very unpolite party of adventurers which tried to bully my party. Too bad for them I was just returning from the Underdark and I wasn't in a mood for talking. I found the knife either on them or in the crates around.

There is also a similar knife, enchanted with fire damage around somewhere in the game, but I don't remember where. Useful for a second mage.

Maybe someone could confirm / add to this?

And if you have the bonus merchants, you can buy a +5 sling that doesn't require bullets - a very good weapon.

It is still useful to have one mage (if you have more that one in your party) that specializes in darts, so that you can take advantage of the darts that you find - after all darts have 3 attacks/round, where as slings only have 1 attack /round.

Finally daggers: In the underdark you can buy a +3 throwing knife (returning) - with 2 attack/round it is much better than a sling.

But in the beginning the will need the sling the most.
