Oh...lord.
rant So I give my 2 weeks notice at the theater, right? All fine and dandy, they ask casually if I have another job and stuff, and I tell them I'm applying at the larger, busier, better paying theater down the road almost. Now the place I'm at now is a dump... 50 people a night is average on a weeknight... that's pretty sad. I want to work at a place that at least gets traffic. But anyways, I gave my application/resume to the Cineplex guys (larger theater), and I figured, naturally, that they would be all over me due to my past year experience at Gateway, so they wouldn't have to train me, etc. I'd just need to learn their policies. Been a week and a half now with no phone call, and I find out today that the GM at my theater went ahead and called the theater I applied, to find out what I'd be making there. I'm just really mad now that he'd call them to find out how much I'll make, which is none of his business, and who knows what else he talked with the managers there about. He could have made up some story about me to convince them not to hire me. He's a bitter man for some reason, which none of us know, and I honestly wouldn't doubt he'd do something like that. THEN I found out that he went and asked the former GM of my theater to find out if I could even be a projectionist there (I applied for projection and to work box office), so I'm just like WTH?! Get out of my life! Why do you care so much that I don't want to work at this dump theater anymore? /rant I'm going for a follow-up tomorrow at the convincing of my father. He says it almost guarantees an interview.. so we'll see. |

Oh wow that would be so annoying, you'd think the theatre you applied to would disreguard an ex-bosses phone call.
Anyways, you have every right to rant about that because if I were in your situation I'd probably rant as well. Don't worry though I'm sure you'll find a much better job soon *gives thumbs up*

I dont know what the laws are like over there, but that sounds like some dodgy shit man - if Canada is like the US, SUE THEM!!!
think about it - loss of income, emotional distress, and the kicker, punitive damages! it could be the best thing that has ever happened to you!

Well I'm tired and dizzy so maybe a misread you, but basically your old boss asked what you're going to get paid and what exact job you would do? Maybe he just want to make a counter offer?

No chance of that. The raises Empire gives is based on how many hours you work. Every 400 hours you get a 6 cent raise. Gotta love the nickel and the penny.

One of life's lessons learned early...
To state the obvious, it costs money when someone leaves a company. You have to recruit a new employee (incurring costs through ads and interviewing), you have to train that new employee, and you have to keep an eye on them until they work out. So when you leave, your boss doesn't just see you leaving. He sees several thousand dollars going out the window. If he's smart, he's concerned and wants to stop it from happening again. Hence, the exit interview. And believe it or not, it's really valuable for the company if the company acts on it. Ask people why they're leaving... is there a trend, something you can fix? Sometimes that's the only way the company finds out. The sad part is when a company chooses to ignore the exit interview... "Why can't we find good employees? They all think we work them like slaves...". Your boss may have been trying to figure out if the other cinema is offering something that he doesn't, and perhaps could. He may or may not be trying to get you to stay. Or he could be trying to undermine your efforts at getting the other position. I'd approach him, mentioning that you heard that he called your new employer, and that since that's a little out of the ordinary, is there anything he'd like to ask you or share with you about it. BTW, something like 90% of people who accept a counter-offer are gone in the next year (me included). When it gets down to it, it's usually not about the money... really. It's usually about other things, and more money won't cover up the other things.
