The reported flaw comes at an awkward time for Symantec. Its chief executive, John Thompson, has campaigned in recent months to convince consumers they should trust Symantec -- not Microsoft Corp. -- to protect their personal information.

Even before this happened their 2006 Internet Security Suite was getting hammered for such poor implementation and configuration.

I find it interesting that when big corporations like M$ and Symantic say how big and "perfect" their software is it isn't too long untiil they fall flat on their face.

Thanks for posting this Larry.

It's mildly amusing that the reporter describes this as a "difficult time" as they've been claiming they're better at keeping data secure than MS. I think he's slightly lost perspective here - so that's one Symantec security flaw, vs how many a day in MS products?

You shouldn't place too much trust in these security companies in any case - where were they to protect you when the Sony rootkit struck?

Considering that only amonth or so ago McAfee released a Update that identified all MS applications as virus and quarantined them.

I will keep you guys posted on this as soon as I get some info from work on Monday (been in Hawaii all week)

Its strange that I heard nothing of this while at a work event all of last week.

Its also strange that the company who found this exploit also sells software that can stop this type of exploit.

Ouch! I wonder how many of the 10s of thousands of Comcast customers who have downloaded the free McAfee firewall, anti-virus, and spyware blocker, due to the fact that thet are Comcast customers, experienced this issue.

It must have been ugly!

Actually, it appears that the opening article is actually not laying into Symantec with all that they deserve - there's been a fair amount of security holes this year alone.

A complete list of them in a detailed article follows in the link, but first the editors comments which isn't in the article:

Quote:
Symantec's Really Bad Year Gains Momentum BJ Gillette (Posted by zanek on May 27, 2006 12:46 AM)

Symantec started 2006 with its hand caught in the cookie jar, admitting to embedding rootkit-like functionality in Norton SystemWorks. Since then, Symantec LiveUpdate for Macintosh, Symantec Scan Engine and Symantec Gateway Security have all served up steaming plates of embarrassment. And now, Symantec Antivirus and Symantec Client Security allow remote exploits. With Wintel closing in on its a/v franchise and its stock already in the tank, the timing couldn't be worse
Article.
