Hi! Got your e-mail and sent reply but it came back as undeliverable, so posting most of it here. Hope you don't mind?

Hi, AliCat!

Glad you find me easy to talk to! I DO try not to lose my rag with people, though I do get cross sometimes.

I understand your viewpoint on Jephtha's daughter. It is easy to read it that way, and I questioned it myself when I first read it. You could be right, too - but for the fact that human sacrifice was forbidden to the Jews by their god, who roundly condemned 'the nations' for such practices. Jephtha would have been put to death for sacrificing his daughter as a burnt offering to god. Also, Jephtha was one of those commended at Hebrews 11:32, which he would not have been had he broken god's law in such a gross way.
Hope that helps!

Regards,

Fljotsdale

Thanks, Fljotsdale!
I've been having a lot of problems with my geocities email. If you know any other good free email (and I don't much like hotmail or ICQ either), let me know!

If Jephtha made a promise to God and then carried that out, wouldn't that take precedence over the Jewish law? What about Abraham and Isaac?

Jephtha's promise:

No! Can you imagine being happy about someone carrying out a promise to YOU that turned out to result in something utterly alien to your beliefs?
Look at this scenario:
A friend of yours has promised to do anything you want if give him your favourite CD as a gift. You ask him to get back for you a sound system you had LOANED to someone else, who then refused to return it. Your friend promises he will get it, no matter what. In trying to get it for you, your friend discoveres that he can only get it by killing the person who has it.

Do you want him to keep his promise?

Abraham and Isaac is a different kettle of fish altogether.
1. God DIRECTLY ASKED Abraham to do it.
2. God had no intention that the sacrifice would actually happen.
3. It was symbolic of the sacrifice of Jesus by god.
4. The Law given to Moses was not yet written.
5. Abraham would have known that even if Isaac actually died, god would have to raise him in order for the promises to be fulfilled.
Read Genesis 17:3-7,15,16; Gen 19,21; Gen 18:18,19; Gen 22:1-18; Hebrews 11:17-19

I don't know if you noticed, but that account also shows that god is not omniscient - all-knowing. He did not know what Abraham would do.

You know what I reckon Fjlotsdale? I reckon that like C.S.Lewis, you are going to be dragged kicking and screaming into the Kingdom of God. You are of too much value and use to him to be left standing outside fuming tapping your foot. Look at you! Such benefit to other believers you are. A tome of accumlated wisdom and knowledge is stored in your mind. He'll hit you Fjlotsdale, he'll hit you and show you what love he feels for you.

I dont find anything wrong with the bible..
The General Discussions and User Polls forums are pretty much free and easy about anything in particular.
CrimsonBlade, make this place your home, but realise you're sharing it with 3000+ other users who dont share your opinion.
