Canada has the highest online piracy rate...

Someone pointed me to this arcticle, I thought it could be interesting, so I decided to bring it up here.

As far as I've always known, in Canada, it's legal to copy music and such, because companies selling blank media have to pay some royalties to the media industries, or something like that, I'm not certain of the technical details. What wasn't considered at the time is that with computers, people can just keep the stuff on their hard drive, so people don't have to buy blank media. (Although I've probably been buying enough for 3 people so...)

The arcticle say that in 2004 the Supreme Court ruled that Internet service providers don't have to pay royalties to artists for downloaded songs. If we ever have to change our copyright laws, I think this is the solution I like the best, because suddently changing the law so that downloading songs online become illegal would really affect a lot of Canadians. We'd probably see a raise in internet provider's prices if they had to pay some royalties, but it would be a smoother change.
