I recently backed up my PC before installing a new HDD using nero BackItUp that compresses everything down into an .nbi file. It allowed me to make 1 DVD of all my backups. Being the untrusty sort that I am, I went ahead and backed up everything a second time to CDs using a regular CD burning system. It was late at night when doing so, and I missed backing up a few folders to CD, but they were done already with the .nbi program. Well, the sneaky people at Nero has tried getting into my wallet with this, because it allowed me to use it once (first time I ever did) to make the backup...but then it expired so I cannot unlock the .nbi files and restore the folders! I did not even know that it was a trial version!

Can anyone offer some help?

Hmmm... 'tween a rock and a hard place, you are

Most trial versions use some sort of date-based algorithm to determine if the trial is still active. Have you tried resetting your system clock temporarily to retrieve the files?

I'll give it a try. Thanks!

you can also uninstall the programs, and reinstall them (go through the registry and wipe out any mention of the software).

Stop being cheap and buy the program. Developers work hard and deserve their due. Nero gave you an opportunity to try their program for free. The fact that you let your trial expire isn't their fault. What you're asking for (to keep on using the program for free after the trial) is basically a warez request but I guess it's OK since you're a mod.

Wow you waited almost 3 years to make that your first post ?????

BTW Larry most backup programs that are trial versions will allow you to make the back up but not restore it.

Not many options here.

Note to other users: Please do not make any mention of Crack or Warez programs as they are agaist the Terms Of Service.

You take the record for being the oldest user with the smallest post count. For that you get a cookie.

What a strange attitude you have there.
Not founded on any truth however so your first post was just hot air.
What a sad thing.
When did I ask for illegal software? Let me help you. I did not. I asked if anyone knew how to help me open the .nbi files. I was hoping that somebody could point me to something that I already had on the program that I was not using right or if there was another program besides Nero that offered the ability to open these files. Where do you come from where even moderators ask for illegal crap? We don't do that here on IW, let me assure you. I have been one of the tougher moderators on enforcing the rule. Since you've been around since 2001 (or longer), you should know that. Intersting how your activation date is the same as mine...the same month that many of us from the Blue Boards were allowed onto these newer Brown Boards and had to reregister our accounts.
Asking for VALID software that can do the job is not illegal and therefore allowed in this discussion. Just like AVG or Avast free antivirus software is used by many people on this site instead of NortonAV, so too can I ask for a program that will open .nbi files without having to use Nero's version.

Its not fair to the developers, you say? Well, I say it was not fair that they let me use their program to back up the files but not open them, and gave me no fore-warning about their scheme anywhere in written form. They were hoping to force me into buying something after they created the necessity...not because I admire their work. I am just glad that I made a second backup of the most vital files with a different program. Also by Nero, I might add.

You know what I think? I think you are just one of those members that was banned long ago, and you have been holding a grudge against me for years...and you've kept this new membership register open for the day when you could try to publically call me out for something and try to stir some old feud up. How lame is that? Should I bother running a background check on your IP address to confirm my suspicion? I mean, what kind of person registers four years ago and then posts his first in such a manner as this?

To those that offered helpful advice: I tried what you suggested but with no luck. I will continue to search for a program that can open those files, but for the principle of the matter I will buy anything that is not made by Nero so as to not give them the money they are trying to steal from me. To allow me to back something up and then hold it hostage for money is legalized theft, IMO.

Update: I tried deleting stuff from the registry after uninstalling and reinstalling and that seems to have been what I needed to do. I am able to open the files and restore them to where they belong.

Thanks guys.
