I need something that'll let me cut bits out of sound files, say the first few seconds, and save it as something else.

And most importantly, it has to be free

Or if I found out how to record from my sound card, then using good ol' Sound Recorder on Windows I could play the song, record the bit I want, then save it.

Any ideas?

You can ALWAYS use sound recorder.

Sometimes, it's really lousy to use, especially if you want to create a .wav file over a minute in length. For that purpose, I have a ten-minute blank file somewhere on my HDD.

To use sound recorder, get a male-male 1/8" phono cable. Insert one end in your speaker/headphone output. Insert the other in your microphone/line-in input. Play the media and record.

My old computer, which was lightning fast at 667 MHz could pull this off, with only 196 MB of RAM.

Last I checked, a manufactured cable of that type costs about $7, US. To make one yourself, out of old headphones, you're looking at about $1 worth of supplies, but that might come out bad if you have no experience with splicing wires.

GOOD LUCK!

I'll look for that cable, perhaps my dad might have one, he is computer techy.

Also, on the site ZFR said I found the program Audacity, which is free, so I'll check that out in the meanwhile.

Thanks guys!
