Anybody here a good with home repairs?

I have a Maytag washing machine that stopped taking in water after it went off-balance and did not shut itself off because the auto-shutoff had been broken for a while. The machine will run properly once water is added to it externally.

Looking up the information, I learned that the only thing it could be is the water intake valve, which has two switches,,,one for the cold and one for the hot. Depending on the selected temperature, those valves open to let the water through. I was going to order the part, but before doing so I was wondering if there is a chance that the problem is not with the valve, but the hot/cold/warm switch that makes the valves open. How would I test such a theory?

By picking up the phone and call and expert. It may cost a few bucks, but i'm sure he knows what he's doing, unlike those knuckleheads right here.

Maytag? Execute their bazillion day warranty.

Try a complete system reset.

You say it started that after it became unbalanced? There is a possiblility that something came loose, but, if it's electrical the only way your going to be able to test it is to take the top cover off, trace out the wiring from the switch up top to where ever it goes in the machine. A wire could have broken. You can use an ohm meter, at the top switch to test resistance, before complete disassembly. But if the actual unit that is powered by the switch is bad, it may read 0 anyway. If, using the ohm meter, you get no resistance, either the unit the wire runs to is shorted, or a wire is broken.

Try WD40 or similar on the valve / solenoid / switches Larry it may just be sticking, and check all the wires and soldering joints ect.

If / when you do get it back up and running Larry really take time to get the washing machine balanced by adjusting the feet. Near enough is NOT good enough. Vibration is the #1 killer of washing machines because people do not take the time to get the balance perfect and check on the adjustment every few months.

Hope it helps
