Couple of newbie questions. I've gone back and read most of the old posts. I did my first enchanment (rephrase - bought my first), enchanted my cuirass with 10 health on cast using gem I stole from mage in Balmora Mage Guild, while she was away on the sabatoge quest (hope there's no negative repurcussions there). Any way, works good for a level 4 fighter character with 72 health. Only 1 charge per use.
Is there a way to know how much enchantment an item can hold? I understand Daedric and ebony hold more than iron or steel, item for item. But how do I know how much a particular item can hold without going into the editor? Is there an in-game way?
Now, spells. When a spell or item says on touch, what does that mean exactly? If an amulet does 1-10 frost damage on touch, how does that work? I equip it as a magic item, I click the left mouse button to cast/use but then what do I have to do to do damage? Do I attack unarmed? Do I click "on" the creature? Can I switch to my weapon and hit like that?
Second spell question: How close do I have to be to cast soul trap? I can use a scroll successfully if the creature is right in front of me but not if it's 5ft away. Do all spells/scrolls work like that, where I have to wait until an enemy is right there before I can cast?

You can take a full soulgem to an enchanter and just keep trying out varous pieces of armor to see what their enchantment value is. But the best way is probably just to look in the editor.

Don't ever use her as an enchanter and you should be fine.

It means that when you cast the spell you have to be close (within melee weapon range) to your target for it to work. This is different from "on target" which will send out a projectile that will effect things that are a good distance from you.

You have to ready your magic attack (usually the 'r' button, walk up to your target and then cast it. Casting uses the same key that swings your weapon.

So, to sum up for us fighter-Redguard types: on touch means very close proximity and on target means a fair distance, I'm assuming in sight. But touch doesn't require me to take some extra step after I cast. I just have to be within melee range?
Thanks Seraph.

That is basically correct. You also need to be aiming at whatever you want to cast the spell on.

On target will send out a projectile-like object, and whatever that projectile hits will be effected. However the projectile is slow which means it can be dodged, and it can be intercepted by other projectiles.

Can the projectile be blocked by a shield? Or are you limited to resistance by magic if it hits you?

And since I've been at work all day, I've had time to think up some more related questions: Is it possible for spells to be interrupted like in some other RPG games? If I cast it and it doesn't work, will I know if I failed or the creature resisted?

Do enemies resist enchanted items like they do spells? Will I ever resist my own spells or enchantments, like chameleon on self on hit for example?

I'll shut up now.

No, you'll 100% hit by a projectile attack. IIRC resistance lower the damage taken when you are hit by the projectile.

Yes. but very rare. since casting spells are fast.

There'll be a small message box below the screen which will tell you whether the enemy resist it or your spell failed.

No, but you can failed in casting it if your magic skill isn't high ebough.
