I think they mean after getting such a bad rep that youbecome a fighter.

Like Paladins, once Rangers have fallen they can in no way regain the Ranger class. From this point on he will be only a fighter, even if your rep reaches 20. This happened to me early in BG1 due to ignorance of a particular encounter so I reloaded from an earlier save. I hope you have one. The rule of thumb "Save Often" is one of the cardinal rules that all of us have to learn the hard way!
