some software of processor that will tell you what's running in the background? Actually Task Manager doesn't give the info I'm looking for. About every couple of minutes I notice something is using 100% of my cpu time. This really screwsup real time sims. Yes I've used most of the ad-ware and spyware software. This doesn't help. Thaks in advance.

i think the processes tab in the task manager has listed everything thats running, though you would have to know what you're looking for to understand what's happening. Other than that, i don't know. I assume you have antivirus stuff, as you have adaware.

What windows version are you running? Sounds like 98...
In Win2k, Task Manager can show you processes as well, and let you sort it by CPU usage. Probably exactly what you're looking for A quick Google search turned this up. Don't know if it's worth it or not, but they're both shareware... link 1 link 2 *edit* frickin' typos... [ 05-27-2004, 02:14 PM: Message edited by: Bungleau ]

To all...I'm running XP Home. The task manager shows whats going on realtime. I'm getting hit with max cpu usage maybe of 2-10 seconds at a time. It's almost impossible to look at the entire list in that time to find the culprit.
But thanks anyway.

Have you tried clicking on the CPU usage column? On my Win2k box, that makes it sort by CPU usage... once for ascending, twice for descending. Or vice versa.

Are there any messages in the System or Application logs? START-->Programs-->Administrative Tools-->Event Viewer.
Or you could go into Performance (also on Admin Tools) and add a "max cpu %" alert. I *think* that'll tell you which program caused the spike.
