two options:
1. open the console (run/cmd.exe) and enter the command 'net stop messenger'. i'm not sure though, if this will stop it permanently or just until you restart windows 2. go to control panel/administrative tools/services and stop and disable the messenger service. if you disable it here it is definitely permanent [img]smile.gif[/img] . Firewall, should block all messenger service traffic going through it.

there's a nice tool out on the web called XP-Antispy which allows you to disable lots of "unwanted features" of Windows XP including the Messenger and Microsofts data gathering from your desktop.

I had the same problem when I installed win2K. I got my firewall to block them. It kind of makes you wonder though, if win2k,me,and xp are all supposed to be more secure than win95/98 why didnt I have this problem with win 98??
