What version of windows? If it's pre-2000 then the chances are that Windows is trying to shut itself down before all the memory has been cleared or something stupid like that - I've heard that 98 tries to shut down too fast. Illegal operation could mean that your program is trying to access memory outside of its address space, this is good to know, but I don't know how to fix it

quick questions:
What OS? is it updated? install any new programs lately? Taskmon is the task manager in 98 or ME i think, are you using the scheduled tasks or anything like that? MSCONFIG: it's your friend. Check that if you can by going to Start:--> Run--> type msconfig , and see if there's anything listed in the programs or services that run on startup. See if you can track it down, see what it's connected to, maybe disable it if you're able. Any more info you can think of won't hurt either.

Hmm... You musta typed a little faster than me Vaskez '98 makes it a little harder to diagnose, as you don't have event viewer or an actual task manager, but i'll throw some suggestions out here. another few questions first, does it happen every time you shut down, or only sometimes? next time you go to shut down, do control-alt-delete, and see if there is anything not resonding on the list. Close all programs manually first, then do the cntrl-alt bit. Also, you might want to try clearing your temp directory. it should be c:\temp, but you might want to back up the contents to make sure you don't lose anything important.

Hmmm... is there anything running in your Systray? (the little clock area in bottom right of the monitor) You might be having an issue with something running there. If your technically inclined, you can always back up important files, and Format C:! any change in hardware or software lately?

Aaaaahh... another Win98 user. Try the followings:
1. Run "MSCONFIG" and uncheck any non-essential programs. You will need to restart Windows once you are done. 2. Pop in your Windows98 CD and copy "taskmon.exe" to your windows folder. Oh, Boot Windows in "Command Prompt only" else Windows will not let you replace the file. 3. If all the above fails, pop in your Windows CD and run setup again. This will re-install windows without removing all your existing programs. (Trust me, I have done it a couple of times myself). [ 08-06-2003, 03:27 PM: Message edited by: Paladin2000 ]
