I don't know if someone's asked this recently...please pardon if it has and please steer me to that post...but if not...

I was wondering if the IW fora was hosted by some commercial host (like EZBoard or Network54), was a creation of commercial software, or something the wonderful folks at IronWorks dreamed up after a night of anchovy pizza. I'm on the hunt for forum script and the IW fora are the best I've ever seen.

::hopes something like this can be found/purchased someplace::

IW is hosted by Ziroc, with his own money. A fair amount of his own money come to that.

You can get boards hosted for free though, www.hyperboards.com use YABB software and seem to work quite well, although it will never be able to host a board this large. www.proboards.com are another one.

Afaik, the actual forum software is UBB. More info can be found here.

Best of luck.

P.S. Pirengle sounds a bit familiar. Any chance you hung (still hang) about on the Blizzard Diablo 1 forum, Realms Beyond or somewhere like that?

More specifically, UBB Classic version 6.3.1

Andrewas, Hyperboards doesn`t use YABB. They use Proboards software v2, but the webmaster is in the process of rewriting the code, to make it Hyperboards Software version 1.0.

Free forum hosts:
Hyperboards - Very new, good helpdesk, good stability. No HTML support. No member powers customisation.
Soon to upgrade, latest information is here.
Proboards - At the moment, are the same as hyperboards. Helpdesk is a little unfriendly, but I doubt they`ll stay stable for much longer.
Also soon to upgrade (to Proboards v3), latest information is here.
Eliteboards, Suddenlaunch, Conforums - Exactly the same as HB and PB, not upgrading anytime soon.
MyiB - Use ikonBoard software. Not stable at all. Optional HTML support on a forum by forum basis. Optional iB Code support on a forum by forum basis. No ability to change skins (= images, colours, everything) in the free package.
Xsorbit - Slow, unstable, bad helpdesk, no HTML support, use YABB Gold. Don`t go there, trust me on this.
Ezboards - Good stability, good speed. Bad everything else.

Or, there are the more reliable pay-only hosts.
Infopop are good, if expensive. UBB doesn`t have sticky threads at the moment, either; so if you want them, go somewhere else.
CCHosting - Look good, and i`m thinking of moving my own forum there. If mum lets me use a pay host...
PhpWebhosting - They seem fairly reliable, I know of atleast one succesful forum (Pandemonium) that uses them. They don`t specialise in forums AFAIK, so you do have a choice of software.

And finally, you can purchase the software, and host it on your own server (or use PHPwebhosting or similar ).
There are a few options for this,
UBB - Very good software; what IW uses. Though as I said above they don`t have sticky threads at the moment. And they`re not cheap.ikonBoard - In the same leages as UBB, and not nearly as expensive.
YABB SE - Again, a very good bit of software. Only problem with it is no HTML support.

The number 1 best forum software about is generally an argument between these three.

Thanks for the link, and yes, we're one and the same. Ever since the Diablo Strategy Forum/Diablo General Forum bit the dust a while back, I migrated to the Lurker Lounge. Still hanging around DSF-1 though.

Do you know Lemming? He posts here too.

I thought I recognised the name

I used to post on the old Diablo board way, way back when I had fun chasing stats and level ups with Lissa and we all wondered at the bot-like antics of LLandru.

After playing the game plus Hellfire and some of the mods to death, I kind of drifted away. Then Darkstone became my obsession and I ended up moderating the forum here. I did buy DII, but for some reason, it never grabbed me the way the original did

Anyway, it's nice to see a familiar face. May all your Zods be Obs

As far as I know, Ikonboard is for free, actually.

The software itself is free; but access to the member centre, and support tickets, seem to cost a little bit... but the website doesn`t exactly say it clearly. Infact, it doesn`t seem to give any information on pricing at all :|

Actually Lennon, you are wrong. It does not cost anything to access the member center or support tickets at Ikonboard. It only costs for Priority Support and Paid installs. Believe me as I was a Support Team member there.

Proboards uses YaBB software which the owner Patrick purchased the full license to do as he wished with it and is modifing the code as I used to be a Support team member there also.

CC hosting is a reliable host as I know the owner and I am part of the Support for the host
