I am going to try to solo an archer through SoA and ToB. Could someone please tell me a little bit about equipment that I would need proficencies, and any other important information. Thanks

Hello, BlackJack!

The Archer is a good class/kit, both solo and non-solo.
My first tip is to be an elf. Because they can get 19 Dex, and AC is important to the Archer. You should also have 18 Str, so you can use all the bows out there (except one).

For proficiences, it is important to be good with Longbows. Mainly because your class is an Archer ( ), Longbows are in the theory better then Shortbows and Crossbows, and the selection of good Longbows is much better then with Shortbows.
He should also get a point or two in Shortswords. It is good to have melee-support when going solo.
So, my suggestion is something like this:

++++ Longbows
++ Shortswords

You can also put a point in single weapon style too, and then take one away from Shortswords.

And that is all you're gonna get from me.

You can ask Dundee Slaytern and Legolas for tips.
I think they both soloed Archers, and they are happy to share their knowledge.
Check out these threads:

I had a nice long in-depth reply here, but I lost it because the server couldn't be found
I'll try typing something similar to what I had wanted to post tomorrow...

Legolas, a hint here!

When making a long post (more than 1 paragraph), always highlight it CTRL+C to copy it to your clipboard just in case the server "burps" as it is so prone to do lately.

If it's a VERY long post, I'll copy it to Notepad or even Word (if I want to spellcheck).

Cheers,
-Sazerac

An archer cannot put more than one slot in a melee weapon, thus they could only put the one slot into shortswords. I personally have never noticed much difference between being proficient and non-proficient in a weapon (-1 to hit and damage, but no loss of attack rate). Thus, put the five slots into longbow, then build up shortbows as backup weapons, due to the unlimited magic ammo shortbows out there. Use the longbows for most opponents, then use the shortbows for those needing higher level weapon bonuses to hit. Also remember that even though it is not your specialty, you can wade into melee, so you can use weapons like the Flail of Ages to handle opponents you can't hit (yes, it is the equivalent of +2 in nonproficient hands, but the energy damage more than makes up for it). Finally, against tougher opponents or stoneskinned mages, use energy arrows, especially acid arrows (since they require no save). I tore up Firkragg with acid arrows (he was actually pretty easy once I used items to get fire resistance above 100% ).

In other words, be versatile. Just because you are not proficient in a weapon, doesn't mean you can't use it. And if you can't hurt the opponent with the weapon you are using, switch weapons. Always alter your tactics to fit the battle at hand, otherwise you will have problems, regardless of what class you play.

Flips through his logbook.

An Archer will have 15 proficiencies to spend as he/she wishes to from level 1-34.

You start off with 6 points. I put mine as follows.

Longbows: ****
Warhammer: *
Single Weapon Style: *

As to why... it is because you do not start off the game with a bow in hand, and none of the weapons in the equipment room are of a bow type. Therefore, until you meet the Goblins, you have to fight melee. Proficiencies in Warhammers will not be wasted. You need Crom Faeyr to bash open locks in ToB, and use the Runehammer to waste Undead.

My final layout of points, which can will be achieved by Chapter 5, is as follows.

Longbow: *****
Shortbow: *****
Quarterstaff: *
Two-Handed Weapon Style: *
Warhammer: *
Single Weapon Style: *
Flail: *
Heh... I always CTRL+C my posts if they exceed 50 words. I learnt my lesson the hard way, when in another forum, I lost... a 2000+ words post. A lot of things died that day, a lot of inanimate things... ...

Also, if I know the post is going to be extremely long, like 500+ words, I write in Notepad first, then transfer it over by copying and pasting. It is easier to 'debug' the post anyway, when seen in the larger window size of Notepad, especially when HTML is involved.
