l33t is a slur of 'elite'. So actually it doesn't mean cool, it means elite. Which has me stumped as there is no way in which I can possibly see users of l33t speak as elite or superior to those who don't.
The other term you mention I guess means cool dudes. Spelling cool as kewl, another 'elite' invention. Bah.

If you want some good advice, stay away from people who spell like that, and most of all don't start using it yourself. It will only make you look like a damn fool who can't even spell proper English and it's such a drag having to spell |_ | |< 3 this when you can just write like this..... [img]tongue.gif[/img]
