Ok, I took the evening to install new mobo. Everything went fine, but cpu fan stopped working. I decided to try and remove the fan a bit, and it wasn´t a smart move, probably destroyed some electrics. Also, possibly, the silver thermal grease between heatsink and CPU "leaked" a bit in the installing process, and now the CPU heats up quickly. It went from 30´C to 70´C in about 15 minutes (just enough time to install some drivers), and I had to turn power off. I have a feeling I wont found replacements from this small city very soon. And there come the questions in:
How great temperatures CPUs stand? I read somewhere that it could temporarily stand 95´C, but what about in the long run? I have a Duron 800Mhz. Which one do you think causes the heating, unsufficient amount of thermal grease or the non-existence of fan? I cant believe that a fan could dramatically drop the grades, so grease is my guess. Thanks. [ 11-29-2002, 01:32 PM: Message edited by: NiceWorg ]

Fan is my guess.
Make sure you have it plugged into the right socket on the mobo. Ive never seen a fan fail quietely so I dont think the fan itself is dead. Mobo fan socket is one of the more robust bits, so I doubt that thats dead either.

Whoa, if you have and AMD cpu with-out a fan, it will easily climb to hign and above the melting point of the cpu. A pentium processor however will automaticly brake to save itself. And for goods sake make sure you have a fan that works, otherwise your machine will run like shiite or not at all.

It is plugged in properly.. I checked it several times, it´s in the processor fan socket, and set up as it was said in instructions. It´s probably broken, the first time I tried it, the fan was stuck.. and *wisely* I used some strength to get it rolling again, and it hasn´t worked since. Of course it was stuck as its not meant to roll without electricity. I´ll be getting a new fan then.

NiceWorg, make sure you get a good fan. AMDs run hot, Durons are bad for it, and coolers designed for an intel chip might not be good enough in the long run. And 800Mhz chip isnt going to cook itself in a hurry though. If youd done this on a faster chip, say a 1.5Ghz, youd have generated enough heat to melt the motherboard beneath the chip, or so I hear.
