Woh, no-one can imagine what he was thinking as he did that, or how much balls he would of needed to do that!
That's real bravery...

Jesus. I've heard this before - but think about it, how long would it take to cut your arm off with a pocket knife. The pain!

depends if it's serrated or not, and then it also depends how sharp.
Depends how high up as well, the flesh is easy to cut, it's the bone that you'd find hard. It's amazing what you can do if you feel it's the only way you can survive.

I watched a special documentary of this guy who told the whole story in his own words...and took the camera-man to the site where it happened and you could see the blood stains on the wall and everything.
To answer your questions Q...It was a dull pocket blade that he had dulled while trying to dig his way out from the rock. He tried for days with that blade. It was not serrated. Finally, he started losing feeling, and it started to stink because it was rotting. That did not stop the tendons from telling his brain that an attack was occuring. When he got to the bone, he did not cut that...he broke it in two by twisting it and popping off with the leverage he had. He had a video camera and all that with him, and left his parents a goodbye message because he knew he was going to die. Even after he got himself free...he still had to get out, and so went onward and came to a cliff where he had to climb down the mountain face of sheer rock, and then was lucky enough to be found by somebody who helped him until a tv station helicopter spotted them and brought him to safety.

Heard this story a long time ago. This guy was even put on the Man Show. If I remember correctly, he used a pocket knife to cut the flesh, then used a stone to smash the bone.

I wasn't asking any questions, I was stating facts.
It's easyer with a sharp, slightly seratted blade.

Cutting through your arm and smashing the bone to escape. I sure as hell couldn't do that, but then again, I'm not sure either. People will do some drastic things to stay alive, and he proved it. |

I think that, were I to face that situation, I would use the knife on my neck and end it all rather than cut off a limb. I wonder what kept him going?
