As usual I was listening to this while doind other things, but I believe I have this right. One of Hussein's son was "in charge" of the national soccer team and they found an Ironmaiden there. It is believed he used it to torture the soccer players. (If I do not have my facts straight here, please correct me.) I guess this was incentive for them to play their best?

Well thats one way to get your players motivated... Its not really surprising though. I wont be surprised by anything they find in Iraq...

I think that particular claim is exaggerated, Reeka. However, torture WAS Uda(?) Hussein's main motivational tool for Iraqi athletes.

According to an article from Sport's Illustrated a couple of weeks ago, the soccor players had the soles of their feet beaten regularly after any important loss. They were also tied to the back of vehicles and drug down the street, stripping the skin from their backs. Next, they were forced to climb a ladder (on thier swollen feet) and jump into a pit of raw sewage (the intent was for their numerous wounds to become infected). All of this was meant to "motivate" them not to lose anymore.

The article listed other forms of torture that were used. Apparantly, Uda felt the best way to motivate athletes was to "take away" whatever physical gifts or advantages they had. He reportedly the members of the Iraqi basketball team confined to a cell that was only 5' high. This meant most of the players had to "stoop over" when they stood up. And they had to take turns standing up because the cell was too small for all of them to lie down at the same time.

So Uda damaged the feet of soccor players (whose primary athletic skill is running) and he confined tall athletes to sub-sized cells so they could see what it was like to feel small. He also personally beat an Iraqi boxer who lost an important international match. The athlete was brought into Uda's office and tied to a chair. Uda then gave the athlete a private "boxing lesson", beating him in the face. After several blows, he turned to the guards and said something like "Take him downstairs and finish it". The boxer was not heard from again.

So there may or may not have been an Iron Maiden (the article didn't mention one), but Uda certainly seemed to manage without one quite well.

Not too long ago, they played 0-0 against some team they should have beaten easily, at least that's what Uday thought. So he had the whole squad whipped. Sometimes i think it wouldn't be too bad if our national footballteam had a coach like that. Maybe they'd work a little harder.

So...what does an Ironmaiden do? I see that it is a small compartment that has long nails pointing inward...but the picture looks like the interior of the thing is wide enough to not get stuck on one if a man was standing still. Does the person have to stay in there so long that he cannot stand for being tired and sleepy...thus getting stuck on the nails?

Yup, the purpose is to make you stay in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time.
